Product Description
About the Design: The motif in this set is an adaptationn of a counterpane motif in Mary Walker Phillips’ Knitting Counterpanes. The scarf is two panels that are grafted at the center. The mittens' thumb gussets are on the palm, for maximum hand movement.
The yarn used is made by a small cooperative of sheep farmers in West Virginia. Settled by Swiss and German immigrants in 1869, many descendants carry on traditional crafts. This yarn is natural & rich with lanolin. I briefly prewashed the yarn prior to knitting, which kept some lanolin, and made for easier knitting.
Yarn: Helvetia Shepherds Association 2-ply, 100% wool, 200 yds/4 oz hanks in Natural: 2 hanks for scarf & 1 hank for mittens
Gauge: 16 sts & 28 rows = 4” (10 cm), and 20 sts & 30 rnds = 4” in St st with size 6 ndls (or sizes to give gauge).
Substitute Yarn Wt.: aran (heavy worsted) I've suggested WYS's BFL aran, as a softer option, or their Jacob aran for the original rustic feel. Happy Knitting! Dawn
Alsacian Scallops Mittens & Scarf
Project Overview
The Alsacian Scallops Mittens & Scarf is a knitting pattern designed by Dawn Brocco that combines a decorative scarf with coordinating mittens. This intermediate-level project features a sculptural scallop motif adapted from Mary Walker Phillips' Knitting Counterpanes collection, creating an elegant and cohesive accessory set with both aesthetic appeal and functional design.
Scarf Construction
The scarf is constructed using a two-panel method that showcases the scallop motif across its surface. The two panels are joined together at the center using the Kitchener Stitch, a grafting technique that creates an invisible seam and allows the pattern to flow seamlessly across the joined panels. This construction method produces a professional finish while maintaining the visual continuity of the scallop design throughout the scarf's length.
Mittens Design
The mittens are designed as a natural companion to the scarf, featuring the same Alsacian scallop motif. A key design feature is the placement of thumb gussets on the palm side of the hand, which maximizes hand movement and provides additional ease throughout the hand for improved comfort and wearability. This thoughtful construction ensures the mittens are both beautiful and practical for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques
- Kitchener Stitch grafting for seamless panel joining
- Thumb gusset shaping for ergonomic fit
- Scallop motif knitting for sculptural texture and visual interest
- Multi-panel construction for coordinated design elements
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed to be worked in aran or heavy worsted weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for the scallop motif while creating a warm, durable fabric suitable for winter accessories. The yarn weight choice ensures the sculptural qualities of the scallop pattern are clearly visible and well-defined in the finished pieces.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, this design is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and construction techniques such as grafting and gusset shaping.
Design Inspiration
The Alsacian scallop motif is a slightly adapted version of a counterpane motif found in Mary Walker Phillips' Knitting Counterpanes, a respected reference for traditional knitting patterns. The designer chose this particular motif for its lovely, sculptural qualities, making it an ideal choice for creating visual interest in both the scarf and mittens.
