Product Description
A comfy, cosy hat with a stunning, yet easy to knit stitch pattern.
The sizes are Women’s S, M, L For finished hat circumference 40.5, 44.5, 49.5cm / 16, 17½, 19½” To fit heads with circumference of around 48.5, 53.5, 58.5cm / 19, 21, 23” If in doubt, knit larger size. The stitch pattern stretches loads, but if it's stretched too much, that might make the hat too short.
For worsted or aran weight yarn.
There are three options for the brim: the turned over ribbed one, the ribbed one that's not turned over, and the one that starts straight away with the Almond Pattern, and has a slightly wavy edge.
Check out the matching Almond Mittens and Almond Cowl by the same designer! All three patterns are available together as Almond Accessories eBook. They are also part of The Almond Collection.
Almond Hat by Dagmar Mora
What is Being Made
The Almond Hat is a comfortable and cosy knitted hat designed by independent designer Dagmar Mora. This project features a stunning yet accessible stitch pattern that creates visual interest without requiring advanced knitting skills. The hat is available in three sizes—Women's Small, Medium, and Large—with finished circumferences of 16 [17½, 19½] inches (40.5 [44.5, 49.5] cm) to fit head circumferences of approximately 19 [21, 23] inches (48.5 [53.5, 58.5] cm).
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The pattern utilizes increases to shape the hat and add texture, including the inc2 technique which works {k1, yo, k1} into a single stitch to increase 2 stitches, and inc2tbl which works {k1tbl, yo, k1tbl} into a stitch for a textured increase. Decreases are also incorporated, such as k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) and p3tog (purl 3 stitches together) to shape and reduce stitches as needed. The pattern includes yarn overs (yo) which create decorative eyelet holes that contribute to the stunning stitch pattern. Working through the back of loops (k1tbl and p1tbl) adds textural variation to the finished fabric.
Stitches Used
The Almond Hat pattern incorporates a variety of essential knitting stitches:
- Knit (k) — the fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl (p) — used to create texture and pattern variation
- Knit through back of loop (k1tbl) — adds a twisted, textured appearance
- Purl through back of loop (p1tbl) — creates complementary textured stitches
- Yarn over (yo) — creates decorative openings that define the hat's signature stitch pattern
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) — a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl 3 together (p3tog) — a decrease that reduces 2 stitches
Materials and Tools
The Almond Hat is knitted using worsted or aran weight yarn. The pattern specifies approximately 100g of yarn (200m / 220 yards), with the shade shown in the project pictures being 1082 Walnut Heather from Lana D'Oro by Cascade Yarns. Knitting is worked on 4.5mm / US 7 double pointed needles (or the appropriate size needed to obtain the correct tension). The pattern establishes a tension of 25 stitches and 24 rows measured over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in the stitch pattern, which knitters should match to ensure proper fit across all three sizes.
