Product Description
When in Iceland… This yoke is my take on the Icelandic lopapeysa style that has been popular since its invention in the 1970’s.
After knitting and wearing Almanac in Iceland I see why this style remains popular. Joyful and quick to make it is hugely practical in a land of exquisite landscapes (and equally exquisite cold).

Almanac Sweater by Tin Can Knits
What Is Being Made
Almanac is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Tin Can Knits, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This versatile pullover sweater is engineered for the entire family, with sizing options ranging from newborns (0-6 months) through 4 years old, and then extending from extra-small through 4XL for older children and adults. The sweater features a classic construction suitable for year-round wear, with finished chest measurements accommodating various ease preferences from fitted to relaxed silhouettes.
Knitting Techniques Used
Almanac employs knitting in the round as its primary construction method, creating seamless garment pieces. The pattern accommodates multiple needle techniques to suit different knitter preferences and skill levels. Knitters can choose between traditional circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs) or alternatively use the magic loop technique with a single long circular needle for a more minimalist approach. The pattern includes stranded colorwork sections, which require managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining even tension across the fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The foundational stitch used throughout Almanac is stockinette stitch, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce the classic smooth, V-textured fabric. The sweater incorporates stranded colorwork patterning, a technique where two colors are carried across the back of the work to create decorative motifs on the front. This colorwork requires careful tension management to ensure the carried yarn (floats) remain loose enough to prevent puckering while staying secure enough to avoid snagging.
Materials and Gauge
Almanac calls for Aran or worsted weight yarn, with specific yardage requirements varying by size as detailed in the pattern's sizing table. The sample garments shown in the pattern were knitted using Istex Léttlopi yarn, demonstrating the aesthetic achieved with this particular fiber. Knitters should work to the specified gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles, or 18 stitches and 23.5 rounds per 4 inches in stranded colorwork using the larger needles, to ensure proper finished garment dimensions.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires two needle sizes: US #4 / 3.5mm needles and US #7 / 4.5mm needles, or substitute sizes as needed to achieve the specified gauge. Needle length requirements vary by size category. Infants and young children (0-6 months through 4 years) need 16-inch circular needles and DPNs in both sizes. Children's sizes (4 years through extra-small) require 16-inch circulars, 24-inch circulars, and DPNs in each size. Adult sizes (small through 4XL) require 16-inch circulars, 32-inch circulars, and DPNs in each size. Essential notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming if needed.
Sizing and Fit
Almanac provides comprehensive sizing across all age groups and adult body types. The pattern emphasizes choosing a size based on actual chest measurement plus desired ease, allowing knitters to customize the final fit. The sizing table provides finished garment measurements to guide selection, with examples showing different ease amounts: positive ease of 3 inches for a more fitted silhouette, 4 inches for a standard comfortable fit, and 5.5 inches for a relaxed, oversized appearance.
