What Is Being Made

Alibi is an original lacy half pi-shaped shawlette design by Threebagsfulled (© Hilary Designs 2012). This downloadable knitting pattern produces a delicate, openwork shawlette measuring approximately 23 inches by 52 inches when blocked. The half pi shape makes it an elegant wrap suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders. The size and shape can be easily customized by adding or deleting increase rows, allowing knitters to adjust the finished dimensions to their preferences.

Techniques Used

This advanced-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its signature lacy appearance and structured shaping:

• Yarn overs (YO) – These create the open, airy lace pattern that defines the shawlette's delicate aesthetic
• Decreases (K2tog and P2tog) – Knit two stitches together and purl two stitches together decreases are used to balance the yarn overs and maintain stitch count while creating directional lace
• Make 1 (M1) increases – A left-leaning increase worked by picking up the horizontal strand between stitches from front to back and knitting through the back loop to twist it closed, preventing holes while increasing for shaping

Materials Required

Needles required include size 8 US circular needles measuring 40 inches in length, which accommodates the shawlette's width. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends during finishing.
