Product Description
“Alibi” is a lacy half PI shaped shawlette that measures approx. 23” x 52” when blocked. The size and shape can be easily altered by adding or deleting increase rows. Just remember you'll need more yarn if you want to make it bigger!
You will need a Size 8 (yes, really a size 8!) circular 40" - 47" needle.
This shawlette is perfect for the slow color changes found in Wolle's Color Changing yarn.
Due to the large needle size, it is also a very quick knit and is perfect for long car rides or knit night!
Alibi Shawlette by Threebagsfulled
What Is Being Made
Alibi is an original lacy half pi-shaped shawlette design by Threebagsfulled (© Hilary Designs 2012). This downloadable knitting pattern produces a delicate, openwork shawlette measuring approximately 23 inches by 52 inches when blocked. The half pi shape makes it an elegant wrap suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders. The size and shape can be easily customized by adding or deleting increase rows, allowing knitters to adjust the finished dimensions to their preferences.
Techniques Used
This advanced-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its signature lacy appearance and structured shaping:
- Yarn overs (YO) – These create the open, airy lace pattern that defines the shawlette's delicate aesthetic
- Decreases (K2tog and P2tog) – Knit two stitches together and purl two stitches together decreases are used to balance the yarn overs and maintain stitch count while creating directional lace
- Make 1 (M1) increases – A left-leaning increase worked by picking up the horizontal strand between stitches from front to back and knitting through the back loop to twist it closed, preventing holes while increasing for shaping
- Blocking – Essential finishing technique to achieve the stated finished measurements and open up the lace pattern for optimal drape
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a lace motif:
- Knit stitch (K) – The primary structural stitch
- Purl stitch (P) – Used in alternating rows to create texture variation
- Yarn over (YO) – Creates intentional holes for the lace effect
- Knit two together (K2tog) – Right-leaning decrease
- Purl two together (P2tog) – Decrease worked on purl rows
- Make 1 (M1) – Increase stitch that twists to close the new stitch
Materials Required
The pattern calls for 480 yards of fingering weight yarn, with Wolle's Color Changing Cotton (100 grams) specified as the designer's choice. Any fingering weight yarn of comparable yardage will work for this project. Needles required include size 8 US circular needles measuring 40 inches in length, which accommodates the shawlette's width. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends during finishing.
