Alewives Cowl by Bristol Ivy

Project Overview

Alewives is a long knitted cowl designed by Bristol Ivy, featuring a sophisticated combination of textured knitting and lace elements. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a luxurious cowl measuring 14 inches wide by 64 inches in circumference, making it an ideal accessory for layering and warmth. The design showcases a sinuous line of lace that winds through lush textured stitching, creating visual interest and depth in the finished piece.

Knitting Techniques

The Alewives cowl employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add complexity and sophistication to the design. The cowl is worked flat from a Provisional Cast-On, which allows the knitter to pick up live stitches later in the construction process. Once the main body is complete, the provisional cast-on stitches are unzipped and joined to the working stitches using a 3-Needle Bind-Off, creating a seamless join and completing the circular cowl. This construction method is particularly useful for achieving a polished finish and allows for flexibility in the final length.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates two primary stitch elements: a texture stitch that forms the lush base of the cowl, and a lace pattern that creates the sinuous decorative line running through the design. The texture stitch is worked to a gauge of 19.5 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches after moderate blocking. The lace pattern is worked in repeating rows, with the pattern notes indicating that odd-numbered rows are charted, suggesting the pattern uses both written instructions and chart notation for clarity.

Yarn and Materials

Alewives is designed to be worked in CVM 1.0 by Clara Yarn, a yarn composed of 100% CVM (California Variegated Mutant cotton), which provides a breathable, natural fiber option. The pattern requires 2 skeins of yarn, totaling approximately 530 yards. The yarn is worked on one 24-inch circular needle or a pair of straight needles in US size 7 (4.5 mm), or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and executing the chosen provisional cast-on method.

Pattern Customization

The Alewives pattern offers flexibility for customization. Knitters can easily lengthen or shorten the cowl to suit their preferences, provided they end on Row 12 of the Lace Pattern and maintain approximately 1.5 yards of yarn for executing the 3-Needle Bind-Off. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various yarn weights and personal sizing preferences while maintaining the integrity of the lace and texture stitch design.
