Product Description
Alcyone the star is one of the Pleiades.
Alcyone the sweater has twist stitch stars in the yoke, 5 different sizes of them so that the decorations are in proportion to the sizes. It is worked bottom up, in the round. The trunk is all stockinette above the decorative edging, so there is plenty of plain knitting to work your favorite shaping modifications in. The hems and yoke are decorated in twist stitch hexagons and stars.
Alcyone Knit Sweater by Christine Guest
What is Being Made
Alcyone is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Christine Guest. This pullover-style garment is worked from the hem upward in the round, offering knitters flexibility to customize the silhouette to their preferences. The sweater features a decorative hem and neckline adorned with twisted stitches that form hexagons and stars, creating visual interest at key transition points.
Construction and Techniques
The sweater is constructed using several key knitting techniques suited for intermediate-level crafters:
- Circular knitting: The entire garment is worked in the round from the hem upward, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless construction
- Short rows with wrapped stitches: A required skill for this project, short rows are used to shape the garment and create custom fit modifications
- Twisted stitches: These decorative elements form the hexagonal and star patterns on the hem and neckline, adding textural detail to the design
- Stockinette stitch: The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette (Jersey stitch), providing a smooth, classic canvas for the decorative elements
Stitches Used
The primary stitches featured in Alcyone include stockinette stitch for the body and twisted stitches for decorative edging. The twisted stitches create geometric patterns of hexagons and stars that frame the hem and neckline, providing visual contrast against the smooth stockinette body.
Yarn and Materials
This sweater is worked in worsted weight yarn, specifically Elemental Affects Cormo Worsted in colorway 122 Pansy. The pattern requires 5 to 11 madejas (skeins) depending on the size selected, with an additional skein recommended for most sizes. Knitters should purchase extra yarn when working in the larger sizes to ensure adequate yardage.
Needles and accessories required:
- Two sets of US 8.5mm (6mm) circular needles with 24-inch cables
- Removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 31 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch and 23 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in twisted stitch. Knitters should wash and lay flat their gauge swatch before measuring to account for yarn behavior. The pattern notes that many knitters tend to work too tightly, so careful gauge checking is recommended to ensure the finished sweater meets intended dimensions.
Customization Options
One of the key features of Alcyone is its flexibility for customization. Since the body is worked in stockinette stitch, knitters have ample opportunity to modify the silhouette to suit their preferences. The pattern also indicates options for omitting sleeves or extending the body length beyond what is shown in the schematic, allowing for personalized fit and style variations.
