Product Description
The Alba Turtleneck is a hip-length, drop shoulder turtleneck with flattering tapered sleeves. It’s worked almost entirely out of HTR/HDC in DK yarn and is very easily customisable to make as long or as short in the body as you wish. It’s a super beginner-friendly pattern, available in both UK & US terminology so you don’t have to translate stitches. The PDF is split into two parts: English terminology pp. 1-8, American terminology pp. 9-16, with little flags on each page to distinguish US/UK terminology.
Bust sizes given as XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X): 100 (110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180) cm, requiring 1334 (1477, 1665, 1800, 1977, 2125, 2311, 2457, 2665) metres of DK yarn.
The garment is designed to have approximately 22-24cm positive ease (looser fit) on the bust and around 6-9cm positive ease on the arms, ensuring an oversized fit. If you’re between sizes or prefer a more fitted jumper, size down.
Alba Turtleneck by Holly Woodward Designs
Garment Overview
The Alba Turtleneck is a hip-length, oversized crochet jumper featuring a classic turtleneck neckline. This design by Holly Woodward Designs is available in a comprehensive size range from XS to 5X, making it an inclusive option for various body shapes and sizes. The sweater showcases casual drop shoulders paired with tapered sleeves, creating a flattering silhouette with a relaxed, contemporary fit.
Construction Method
This crochet sweater employs a unique vertical and horizontal construction approach that differs from traditional garment assembly. The body is worked vertically, while the sleeves are constructed horizontally. This method allows for intuitive customization: the body length is determined by the number of stitches in each row, while body width is controlled by the number of rows worked. This approach makes the pattern highly adaptable for achieving custom fit and length adjustments.
Stitches and Techniques
The Alba Turtleneck utilizes rows of Half Treble Crochet (HTR) stitches worked throughout the garment to create a knit-like visual effect. This stitch choice produces a fabric with a refined appearance that mimics the look of traditional knitted sweaters, despite being created entirely through crochet techniques. The pattern employs simple geometric shapes that are sewn together during finishing, eliminating complex shaping techniques and making construction straightforward.
Skill Level and Suitability
Designed as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Alba Turtleneck is an excellent choice for those new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch work, simple shape assembly, and lack of complicated shaping make it accessible to crocheters just starting their garment-making journey. Simultaneously, the pattern offers enough simplicity and satisfaction to appeal to experienced crocheters seeking a quick and easy project that works up efficiently.
