AKARI Seamless Top-Down Knit Sweater by Regina Moessmer

What is Being Made

AKARI is a seamless knit sweater designed by Regina Moessmer and worked from the top down. This beginner-friendly pullover features a classic silhouette with an elegant A-line shaping at the lower body. The sweater is constructed entirely on the wrong side to eliminate purl stitches, creating a smooth stockinette finish throughout the garment. Available in eight sizes ranging from XS to XXXL, AKARI accommodates a wide range of body types and fit preferences.

Construction Techniques

AKARI employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its refined construction and comfortable fit. The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down, meaning knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward to the hem. This method allows for easy fitting adjustments during the knitting process.

  • German Short Rows Technique: The neckline shaping utilizes the German short rows method, a precise technique that creates smooth, graduated decreases without visible gaps or holes. This results in a well-fitted neckline that sits properly on the shoulders.
  • Raglan Increases: Sleeve cap shaping is achieved through raglan increases, which distribute increases evenly across the shoulder area. This classic construction method creates comfortable armholes and allows for natural shoulder movement.
  • A-Line Shaping: To create the flattering A-line silhouette, additional stitches are strategically added to the lower portion of the body, providing gentle flare without bulk.
  • Divided Hem: The hem is divided on both sides, allowing for flexible finishing options and a polished appearance.

Stitches Used

AKARI is primarily constructed using stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric. The entire sweater is worked on the wrong side to avoid purl stitches, meaning the knitter works purl stitches that appear as knit stitches from the right side. This approach simplifies the stitch work while maintaining the desired appearance of traditional stockinette stitch.
