What Is Being Made

The Airstream Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Kimberly Voisin of Wee Studio. This hat features a unique construction inspired by the classic Airstream trailers, with their distinctive patchwork of metal sheets and rivets. The design offers retro styling and is suitable for the entire family, with finished measurements available in multiple sizes: Infant/6-12 months (16"), Toddler (18"), Child (20"), and Adult (22"). The hat is designed to be extra warm and stretchy, making it an ideal accessory for cooler weather.

Construction Techniques

The Airstream Hat employs a multi-part construction method that mirrors the assembled nature of vintage Airstream trailers. The main body of the hat is knit in the round and then folded over to create additional warmth and stretch. The front and brim sections are created by picking up stitches from the body, a technique that allows for seamless integration of different hat components. The crown top is knit separately and sewn on to complete the design. This modular approach creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.

The Airstream Hat features a classic knit 2 purl 2 rib pattern as its primary stitch work. • Yarn: Swish Worsted weight yarn in Airstream colorway, 100% Superwash Merino Wool, 110 yards per 50 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: 2 skeins for Infant and Toddler sizes, 2 skeins for Child size, and 3 skeins for Adult size.
• Needles: Size 6 US (4.25mm) 16" circular needle, or size needed to achieve proper gauge
• Notions: Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections
