Product Description
So after designing the 2 layer RaRa for my daughter, I couldn’t help but wonder what an adults one would look like.. so here it is! Great to make matching outfits, and so much fun. Same as the children’s pattern you can adjust your length easily to what suits your requirements. Optional waist band instructions are also included for extra support. You may wish to add some elasticated webbing, or a draw string tie, and some bead added the the ties finish it nicely, but again this is optional.
Adults RaRa Skirt by Sam Hermes
What Is Being Made
The Adults RaRa skirt is a two-layer crochet skirt designed by Sam Hermes in sizes 8–16. This garment features a distinctive ruffled construction with two separate layers that create the characteristic RaRa silhouette. The finished length ranges from approximately 45–47cm depending on size, with an unstretched waist circumference of 26–28 inches. This intermediate-level project is ideal for crocheters looking to create a fashionable, wearable garment with textural interest.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its layered, ruffled effect. Post stitches are central to the design, specifically front post half trebles (Fbhtr) and back post half trebles (Bphtr), which create dimensional texture by working around the post of stitches from previous rows. The pattern also utilizes loop manipulation, working into the front loop only (Flo) and back loop only (Blo) to control fabric drape and ruffle formation. An optional reverse double crochet border is available to finish the edges of each RaRa layer with a decorative, textured edging. The two-layer construction involves building separate ruffled sections that stack to create the full silhouette.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch): Foundation stitch for starting the skirt
- Half treble (htr): Primary stitch for the body of the garment
- Front post half treble (Fbhtr): Creates raised texture by working around the post of previous stitches
- Back post half treble (Bphtr): Works behind the post to add dimensional shaping
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and securing stitches
- Reverse double crochet (Rev dc): Optional finishing stitch for borders
The pattern also incorporates front loop only (Flo) and back loop only (Blo) techniques to manipulate how the fabric sits and ruffles.
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in four coordinating colors: Blush Pink (Yarn A), Washed Teal (Yarn B), Champagne White (Yarn C), and Mustard (Yarn D). The aran weight yarn provides structure and drape suitable for a skirt silhouette. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 balls for Size 8 to larger quantities for Size 10 and beyond. A 5mm crochet hook (UK size 6, US size H-8) is used throughout the project. Additional tools include a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to work in rounds. The use of post stitches and selective loop working requires some experience, making it suitable for crocheters who have completed several projects and are ready to explore textural techniques.
