Adult Joey Socks by Myriam Forneris
Project Overview
Adult Joey Socks are unisex knitted socks designed by Myriam Forneris as part of a collection perfect for matching parent-child sets, though equally suited for any adult wearer. These socks are worked using a toe-up construction method, offering a modern approach to sock knitting that allows for precise fit and minimal waste.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of adult-sized socks available in three size options: Small (56 stitches), Medium (64 stitches), and Large (72 stitches). The socks are designed as unisex garments, making them versatile for various wearers and occasions. The toe-up construction method is a popular technique among sock knitters, as it provides greater control over fit and allows knitters to work from the ground up.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Adult Joey Socks employ toe-up construction, a technique that begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. This method is particularly valued for its ability to accommodate custom fit and for minimizing leftover yarn. The pattern utilizes circular needle knitting, which allows for seamless, in-the-round construction. Knitters work continuously in rounds rather than flat pieces, resulting in a finished sock with no seams to weave in.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used in these socks is Stockinette Stitch, worked in the round. Stockinette Stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side, making it an ideal choice for showcasing hand-dyed yarn colors and patterns. The gauge for this pattern is 28 stitches and 36 rounds per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in Stockinette Stitch, which is typical for fingering-weight yarn construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Adult Joey Socks are designed to be worked in 4-ply fingering-weight yarn. The pattern recommends Piratenwolle Handdyed Sockwool (100 grams, 420 meters per 100 grams, 75% wool and 25% polyamide blend) in the colorway Honigsenf. Yardage requirements are approximately 60 grams for size Small, 65 grams for size Medium, and 75 grams for size Large. The polyamide content in the recommended yarn provides durability and elasticity, extending the life of the finished socks.
Needles and Tools
Construction requires 2.5 millimeter (US size 1) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer. The longer circular needle length accommodates the small circumference of sock knitting while maintaining comfort during extended knitting sessions. Additional materials include a stitch marker for marking the beginning of round if desired, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some prior experience. While sock knitting fundamentals such as working in the round and managing a small circumference are required, the straightforward Stockinette Stitch construction and toe-up method provide a manageable learning experience for those ready to advance beyond beginner projects.
