Adrastea Reversible Knit Hat by Tori Gurbisz
What is Being Made
Adrastea is a reversible knit hat designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a gathered hat that features a unique button closure system. The hat is named after one of Jupiter's moons, which itself was named for a nymph in Greek mythology who cared for Zeus during his infancy. The reversible construction and button detail make this hat a versatile and stylish accessory suitable for various head sizes.
Sizing and Fit
Adrastea is available in four sizes to accommodate different head circumferences:
- XS: 16.75 inches / 42.5 cm finished, fits heads 17 to 19 inches / 43 to 48.5 cm

Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate knitting project employs a distinctive stitch pattern that showcases yarn texture and color variation. The pattern stitch is worked in the round, making it ideal for displaying the characteristics of light-colored yarns or highlighting color changes in semi-solid yarn varieties. The reversible construction adds design complexity, allowing the hat to be worn with either side facing outward. Button closures are incorporated into the design to create the gathered look that defines this hat's aesthetic.
Gauge and Needle Requirements
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 24 rounds equals 4 inches / 10 cm when working the pattern stitch with US 7 / 4.5 mm needles. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to obtain this gauge with their chosen yarn.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern is designed to work with DK-weight yarn. The sample shown uses Madelinetosh DK Twist, a 100% superwash merino yarn with a yardage of 250 yards / 229 meters. The sample is worked in the colorway Farmhouse White, which effectively displays the stitch pattern texture. DK-weight yarn is an excellent choice for this project as it allows the stitch definition to shine while creating a lightweight, wearable hat.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires US 7 / 4.5 mm needles in a 16-inch circular length for the main knitting. Knitters may also use longer circular needles worked with the magic loop technique or double-point needles, depending on personal preference and experience level. Additionally, US 5 / 3.75 mm needles in 16-inch circular length are needed, likely for ribbing or finishing details. Having multiple needle options allows knitters to choose the method most comfortable for their knitting style.
Project Summary
Adrastea is an intermediate-level knitting project that combines technical skill with creative design. The reversible construction and button-closure gathering feature make this hat a unique addition to any knitter's portfolio. With its focus on stitch pattern visibility and available in multiple sizes, this downloadable PDF pattern offers flexibility for knitters of varying experience levels seeking a moderately challenging project. The use of superwash merino yarn ensures durability and easy care for this functional and fashionable accessory.
