What Is Being Made

Addie's Baby Blanket is a heirloom-style crochet baby blanket designed by Angela Plunkett of Little Monkeys Designs. This finished blanket measures 30 inches by 35 inches, making it an ideal size for gifting to a new mother or for crocheting as a personal keepsake. The blanket is constructed to be treasured for years to come, combining both visual beauty and durability suitable for regular use with infants and young children.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The primary technique featured in this pattern is Honeycomb Tunisian crochet stitch, which creates a gorgeous textured fabric with a distinctive honeycomb appearance. Tunisian crochet is a hybrid technique that combines elements of traditional crochet and knitting, producing a denser, more fabric-like result than standard crochet.

The pattern includes instructional videos that teach the Honeycomb stitch pattern, effectively providing a mini Tunisian crochet course alongside the main project. This educational component makes the pattern valuable for crocheters looking to expand their technical skills. Additional stitches used in the construction and finishing include:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – for foundation and pattern work
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – for joining and shaping
  • Single crochet (sc) – for structural elements
  • Double crochet (dc) – for additional stitch variations
  • Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) – foundational to the Tunisian crochet technique

The pattern also includes instructions for adding a delicate border as a finishing touch, which frames the blanket beautifully and provides a professional, polished appearance.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern uses sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating soft, drape-friendly fabrics suitable for baby items. The sample blanket shown in the pattern was crocheted using Appalachian Baby Design Organic Cotton Sport Weight yarn. Total yarn required is 1080 yards, equivalent to approximately 6 balls of yarn at 3 ounces per ball with 194 yards per ball.

A Size 4 (4.25 mm) Tunisian crochet hook is required, paired with a 40-inch extender to accommodate the width of the blanket during construction. The use of an extender cable is essential for Tunisian crochet projects, as this technique requires holding a large number of active stitches on the hook simultaneously.

Difficulty Level

Addie's Baby Blanket is rated as an intermediate difficulty crochet pattern. While the pattern includes instructional videos to teach the Honeycomb Tunisian stitch, prior crochet experience is beneficial. The intermediate classification reflects the specialized nature of Tunisian crochet techniques, which differ from basic single crochet or double crochet work. Crocheters with foundational skills in standard crochet stitches will find the included video tutorials helpful for mastering the specific Honeycomb stitch variation.
