Add a Seamless Cable Border to a Blanket
Project Overview
This knitting tutorial, designed by Lara Simonson, teaches the technique of adding a seamless cable border to a knit square or blanket. The method is versatile and can be applied to any blanket project, making it an excellent skill for finishing blanket edges with decorative cabled detailing. The tutorial provides multiple design options, allowing knitters to choose the cable style that best suits their project.
What Is Being Made
The primary project is a knit blanket with a seamless cable border. The blanket begins as a knit square, and the cable border is added directly to the finished square without requiring seaming. This technique creates a polished, professional finish with integrated cable detailing around the perimeter of the blanket.
Techniques Used
The tutorial teaches several key knitting techniques essential for creating a seamless cable border:
- Cable crossing techniques – The foundation of the border design, involving the manipulation of stitches to create twisted, rope-like textures
- Stitch placement and manipulation – Working with cable needles to hold stitches while crossing other stitches in front or behind
- Edge finishing – Techniques for integrating the cable border seamlessly with the existing blanket edge
- Multiple design variations – The tutorial includes four distinct border options, with three illustrated examples and one customizable option for personalized designs
Stitches Used
The tutorial features specific cable stitches and abbreviations for creating the border pattern:
- C4B (Cable 4 Back) – Place the next 2 stitches on a cable needle and hold to the back of work. Knit the next 2 stitches from the left needle, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the right.
- 2/1/2 LPC (Left Purl Cross) – Place 3 stitches on a cable needle and hold to the front of work. Knit 2 stitches from the left needle, slip the center stitch from the cable needle back to the left needle, purl that stitch, then knit the remaining 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable with a purl stitch detail.
- C3RP (Cable 3 Right Purl) – Place 1 stitch on a cable needle and hold to the back of work. Knit the next 2 stitches from the left needle, then work the stitch from the cable needle.
- Garter stitch – An optional edge finish for the square, creating a bumpy, textured border
- Moss stitch – An alternative edge finish for the square, creating a more subtle, woven appearance
Materials
This project uses worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for blanket projects. Knitters will also need knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn and a cable needle for holding stitches during cable crossings. The cable needle is essential for executing the cable techniques described throughout the tutorial.
Difficulty Level
This tutorial is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to advance their technique. Prior experience with basic knitting stitches and cable techniques is recommended before attempting this project.
