Adam's Point Pullover by Peter Franzi

Garment Overview

Adam's Point Pullover is a men's crocheted sweater designed by Peter Franzi that celebrates the natural beauty of premium yarn through a simplified stitch pattern. This seamless, top-down construction creates a sophisticated pullover suitable for a gentleman's winter wardrobe. The design is available in five finished sizes ranging from 38 inches to 54 inches chest circumference, with the displayed sample measuring 46 inches.

Construction Method

This pullover is constructed using a seamless, top-down approach, which allows the crocheter to try on the garment during the building process and adjust the length to personal preference. The top-down method begins at the neckline and works downward to the hem, eliminating the need for seaming pieces together after completion.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

Adam's Point Pullover employs a straightforward stitch vocabulary that prioritizes the yarn's inherent qualities over complex stitch work. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is the double crochet, which creates a fabric with good drape and consistent texture. The pattern includes specialized techniques such as the beginning foundation double crochet corner stitch, which provides a structured foundation for the garment's construction.

  • Double Crochet (dc): The foundational stitch creating the body of the sweater
  • Foundation Double Crochet (fdc): Used to establish the initial stitches without requiring a separate chain foundation
  • Beginning Foundation Double Crochet Corner (Beg fdc corner): A specialized corner technique that combines chain stitches with double crochets to create structured corners
  • Stitch Markers: Used to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases

Yarn and Materials

Adam's Point Pullover is designed to be worked in Malabrigo Arroyo, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn that provides softness, elasticity, and easy care. The yarn is available in sport weight, offering a balance between drape and structure. The color shown in the pattern is #862 Piedras. Yardage requirements range from 9 to 11 hanks depending on the finished size, with each hank containing 335 yards and weighing 3.5 ounces.

Tools and Gauge

The pattern calls for a size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook, though hook size adjustment may be necessary to achieve the correct gauge. The target gauge is 24 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches when measured in the pattern stitch. A gauge swatch is provided in the pattern instructions, worked in foundation double crochet and double crochet rows to ensure accurate sizing before beginning the full garment.

Difficulty Level

This pullover is rated as an intermediate-level crochet project. While the stitch vocabulary is relatively simple, the seamless top-down construction and shaping techniques require experience with garment assembly and stitch manipulation. Crocheters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions, working in the round, and managing stitch markers to successfully complete this project.

Design Philosophy

The Adam's Point Pullover prioritizes simplicity and yarn quality, allowing the natural characteristics of the superwash merino wool to become the focal point of the finished garment. By limiting the stitch palette to foundational techniques, the designer creates a timeless piece that showcases the yarn's texture, color, and drape properties.

LoveCrafts is great!

Quite honestly the pattern is impossible to follow! Super confusing. I scrapped the whole thing three times and started over (I am a quite experienced crocheter) and just could not figure it out. There is no way to contact the creator so I guess it's just a wash. Disappointing, as the sweater is beautiful!
