Product Description
Alphabet letters, knitted in large squares, are ideal for making a set of soft ABC building blocks. The blocks shown are knitted in Rowan Felted Tweed DK. A single ball of each colourway will make the three ABC blocks shown. If you want to make additional blocks we offer some suggested colourways; you need to allow a ball per colourway for each block (i.e. six squares).

What is Being Made
ABC Knitted Blocks are soft, three-dimensional building blocks featuring alphabet letters knitted into large squares. These blocks are designed as toys for children and can be made as a complete set or individual pieces. Each finished block measures 15 x 15 x 15cm (6 x 6 x 6 inches), making them ideal soft play toys. A single ball of yarn in each colorway will produce three ABC blocks, allowing crafters to build a complete alphabet collection or create multiple sets with different color combinations.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to create the three-dimensional blocks. The pattern uses moss stitch as a primary stitch pattern, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape and structure—ideal for a toy that will be handled frequently. The blocks are constructed by knitting flat square panels that are subsequently assembled and stuffed to create the cube shape. The pattern includes motif integration, where alphabet letters are incorporated into the knitted squares using different colored yarns or stitch variations. Crafters will need to understand basic shaping techniques and the ability to read chart-based motifs for letter placement.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the blocks, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern. This stitch is worked as K1, [p1, k1] to end on alternating rows, creating a dense, textured fabric.
- Stockinette Stitch – Used in sections where smooth fabric is desired for the letter motifs to stand out clearly against the background.
- Garter Stitch – Likely used in edge treatments and cast-on/cast-off rows to provide stability and prevent curling.
Materials
The ABC Knitted Blocks pattern calls for Rowan Felted Tweed DK yarn, a double knit weight that provides excellent stitch definition and durability for toys. The pattern is worked on 3.75mm (US 5) needles
The pattern includes multiple motifs (Motif B and Motif C are referenced) that accommodate different alphabet letters. Each motif begins with casting on 35 stitches and works through approximately 46–47 rows before casting off in moss stitch. The structured row counts and stitch counts ensure consistent block sizing. The pattern suggests making pairs of blocks with reversed colorways to maximize yarn usage and create coordinated sets. This intermediate-level project requires familiarity with reading knitting patterns, working from charts, and basic finishing techniques such as seaming and stuffing.Pattern Details
