Product Description
Ever since watching the cartoons of ‘The Ant and the Aardvark’ as a kid, I’ve loved aardvarks, because they are such alien-looking and adorable animals. Therefore, I’ve decided to design the rather weird looking -but super cute - aardvark as a toy with very mischievous eyes! This knit is an easy project and the resulting toy is suitable for kids (and adults ) of all ages!
It measures 23 cm end and it is an easy knit. The aardvark is knitted on double pointed needles. The knit asks for some minor intarsia color work and loop stitches (which are explained in the pattern.
This aardvark was knitted on 2.75 mm double pointed needles (UK 12, US 2) in Lana Grossa Baby Soft (13) rose and Lana Grossa Mohairlana (13) black brown.
Not merely the colors, but also the textures can vary between your chosen yarns. Try using a soft yarn for the base, so the toy turns out really huggable!
Enjoy!
Cartoon Aardvark Knit Toy by AnimalKnitdom
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern creates an adorable cartoon-style aardvark toy inspired by classic animation characters. The designer drew inspiration from 'The Ant and the Aardvark' cartoons and the Pink Panther, combining the distinctive alien-like features of an aardvark with pink coloring and expressive, mischievous eyes. The finished toy measures approximately 23 cm from nose to tail's end, making it a compact plush suitable for children and adults of all ages.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This aardvark toy is created using fundamental knitting techniques on double pointed needles, making it an accessible intermediate project for knitters with basic skills. The pattern employs in-the-round knitting methods typical of toy construction, allowing the crafter to build three-dimensional forms seamlessly. The toy is constructed in separate pieces—including limbs, body, head, tail, and ears—which are then assembled together to create the final character.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 2.25 mm double pointed needles (UK size 13, US size 1) and uses two distinct yarn weights for visual contrast and character definition:
- Lana Grossa Baby Soft (13) in rose—the primary yarn for the aardvark's body and main coloring
- Lana Grossa Mohairlana (13) in black brown—used for details such as eyes, nose, and other accent features
The combination of these two yarn types creates the cartoon aesthetic with the pink body characteristic inspired by the Pink Panther, while the mohair yarn adds texture and definition to facial features.
Finishing and Stuffing
Once all pieces are knitted, the toy is assembled and filled with soft toy filling to create a plush, huggable finished product. The pattern emphasizes firmly stuffing the limbs and tail to ensure the aardvark can stand independently, adding to its playability and display appeal. This construction method creates a durable, child-safe toy suitable for interactive play.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, this pattern is accessible to knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with double pointed needles in the round. The straightforward construction and use of fundamental knitting techniques make it an ideal project for those looking to expand their toy-making skills without excessive complexity.
