Product Description
I’ve been interested in beekeeping and the amazing properties of honey, so when I saw this delicious yellow yarn I knew I had to create a cowl that would combine the geometry of honeycomb with my love of eyelet lace. The lace pattern for this cowl is worked flat with a garter border that drips its way throughout the warm, golden glow of Malabrigo’s Frank Ochre. While designing this cowl I was reminded of Herb Alpert’s arrangement of A Taste of Honey - what perfect name for a piece inspired by the busy bee! Enjoy a hot cup of tea while knitting this cowl, and don’t forget to add a nice big spoonful of honey!
A Taste of Honey Cowl
What is Being Made
A Taste of Honey Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Barb @ Woollyside that combines geometric honeycomb patterns with eyelet lace work. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a warm, golden accessory inspired by beekeeping and the natural beauty of honey. The cowl features a garter stitch border that flows throughout the design, creating a finished piece with visual depth and texture.
Design Inspiration and Concept
The cowl draws inspiration from the designer's interest in beekeeping and honey's remarkable properties. The geometric structure of honeycomb is translated into the lace pattern, while eyelet lace adds delicate detail and visual interest. The warm, golden colorway of the yarn reinforces the honey theme, and the design is named after Herb Alpert's arrangement of A Taste of Honey, perfectly capturing the connection to busy bees and natural sweetness.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Flat knitting construction
- Eyelet lace pattern work
- Garter stitch borders
- Honeycomb-inspired geometric patterning
Stitches and Stitch Details
The cowl utilizes garter stitch for the border that drips throughout the design, providing a stable frame for the delicate work. Eyelet lace stitches form the primary pattern, creating openwork sections that showcase the yarn's beautiful color while adding airiness to the finished piece. The combination of these stitches produces a balanced design with both structure and elegance.
Yarn and Materials
This project calls for Malabrigo Rios yarn in the colorway Frank Ochre, a worsted weight yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. Two skeins are required, with each skein providing 210 yards per 100 grams. The superwash merino fiber ensures durability and easy care, while the worsted weight provides warmth and drape suitable for a cowl accessory.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern recommends U.S. size 6 (4 mm) needles, available in either 14-inch straight needles or 24-inch circular needles. Knitters are encouraged to select needle sizes that achieve the specified gauge, as individual tension varies. The target gauge is 18 stitches and 33 rows per the pattern specifications, ensuring proper fit and drape of the finished cowl.
Difficulty Level
This cowl is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with experience in basic stitches who are ready to work with lace patterns and more complex stitch sequences. The combination of garter stitch borders and eyelet lace work provides a manageable challenge while creating a sophisticated finished garment.
