Pattern #868 Blueberry Smoothie – Kids' A-Line Tunic and Dress Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman in Valley Yarns Conway

Pattern #868 Blueberry Smoothie, designed by Julie Turjoman and published under the Valley Yarns brand, is a charming children's knitting pattern that produces a versatile A-line tunic and dress worked in a two-color stripe design. Crafted in the soft, easy-care Valley Yarns Conway yarn, this piece is described as ideal for three-season wear, making it a practical and stylish addition to any little girl's wardrobe. The silhouette is designed to grow with the child — worn as a dress in younger years and later as a tunic layered over leggings — offering excellent long-term wearability.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a children's A-line tunic and dress with a classic stripe colorwork design. The garment features a gently flared A-line shape that flatters a range of ages and body types. It is sized to fit children from 6–12 months through 10–12 years, with seven size options in total:

  • 6–12MO, 1–2YR, 2–4YR, 4–6YR, 6–8YR, 8–10YR, 10–12YR

Finished chest measurements range from 18½ inches to 30¾ inches, and the pattern is designed to fit with 0 to ½ inch of positive ease for a neat, close-fitting silhouette. The sample shown in the pattern photography is knitted in Size 6–8YR.

Techniques Used

This pattern draws on a combination of construction techniques that give knitters a well-rounded project experience. The garment is constructed using the following methods:

  • Bottom-up construction — the body is begun at the hem and worked upward toward the shoulders, a traditional approach that allows for easy length adjustments
  • Worked flat — certain sections of the garment are knitted back and forth in rows, producing flat fabric panels
  • Worked in the round — other sections, such as the sleeves or yoke, are knitted circularly to minimize seaming and create seamless tubes of fabric
  • Seamed construction — finished pieces are joined together using seaming techniques, giving the garment structure and a polished, professional finish typical of classic knitwear
  • Stripes — the two-color stripe design is a key decorative feature, alternating between Color A (Navy, colorway 12) and Color B (Periwinkle, colorway 14) for a fresh, blueberry-inspired palette

The combination of flat and in-the-round knitting, along with seaming, makes this an excellent pattern for knitters who want to build foundational garment construction skills. Stripe knitting at this level involves simple color changes at row or round intervals, with no complex colorwork such as stranded or intarsia techniques required.

Stitches Used

While the pattern is rated advanced beginner in difficulty, the stitch vocabulary is accessible and well within reach for knitters who have completed a few basic projects. Knitters should be comfortable with:

  • Knit and purl stitches — the foundational building blocks of the fabric
  • Working in the round — using both double-pointed needles and circular needles
  • Basic shaping techniques — including increases and decreases to create the A-line silhouette and shape the armholes and neckline
  • Gauge-based sizing — achieving the correct tension is essential for proper fit across all seven sizes

The advanced beginner designation reflects the multi-technique nature of the construction — combining flat knitting, circular knitting, seaming, and stripe color changes — rather than any particularly complex stitch pattern. Each individual technique is approachable, but managing them together gives this pattern a satisfying level of engagement.
