Product Description

This is a star shaped blanket that is knitted in the round in stocking stitch, with a garter stitch boarder. It uses both left and right make one increases and a centered double decrease to create an eight pointed star pattern. Once the set up is complete two rows are repeated making this an easy pattern to memorise. It uses Caron Cakes so there is a large variety of colours to choose from and because Caron Cakes feature large colour repeats you get a striped effect that emphasises the star shape without having to join yarn. The small size uses one cake and is 44 inches (112 cm) across and the large size uses two cakes and is 62 inches (158 cm). It is suitable as a throw, a lap rug or for a baby blanket. All instructions for the increases and deceases are included in the pattern. The pattern uses markers for the end of each section and to mark the position of the decreases.

8 Pointed Star Blanket by Hannah Smith

Project Overview

The 8 Pointed Star Blanket is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to create a striking geometric throw blanket featuring an eight-pointed star motif. This downloadable knitting pattern is ideal for crafters seeking to combine classic stitch techniques with modern colorwork appeal in a versatile home accessory.

What Is Being Made

This project produces a finished blanket or throw featuring a prominent eight-pointed star design as the central focal point. The blanket is available in two size options: a smaller 44-inch (112 cm) version at its widest point, or a larger 62-inch (158 cm) version, allowing makers to choose based on their intended use and yarn availability. Both sizes are suitable for decorative throws, baby blankets, or lap blankets depending on preference.

Knitting Techniques and Construction Method

The blanket is knitted in the round, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The primary stitch used throughout the body is stocking stitch, which produces the smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as the ideal canvas for the star motif to stand out visually. To frame and define the blanket's edges, a garter stitch border is incorporated, providing a textured, structured frame that contrasts with the smooth center and prevents curling at the edges.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch forming the body of the blanket, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working circularly) to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
  • Garter Stitch: Used for the border, created by knitting every row or round to produce a textured, bumpy fabric that frames the blanket and adds visual interest
  • Centred Double Decrease (CDD): A shaping technique where two stitches are slipped together as if to knit two together, one stitch is knitted, and the two slipped stitches are passed over the knitted stitch. This decrease is used eight times to mark the decrease points that form the star's pointed rays
  • Knit Front and Back (KF&B): An increase technique where the working yarn is knitted into both the front and back loops of a single stitch, creating one new stitch. This technique is used to expand stitches outward from the star's center, building the geometric shape
  • Markers: Sixteen stitch markers are essential notions used throughout the pattern: eight markers track the decrease points that define each star point, seven markers denote the end of each section to maintain pattern clarity, and one marker indicates the end of the round for circular knitting

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Caron Cakes yarn in aran weight, a popular variegated yarn that automatically creates color changes without the need for manual color work. The small blanket requires one Caron Cakes Small ball, while the large blanket requires two cakes. The yarn composition is 80% acrylic and 20% wool, providing a blend of durability, softness, and easy care. The total yardage needed is 383 yards (350 meters), with a finished weight of 200 grams (7.05 ounces). The illustrated colorway shown in the pattern is Cake Pop (17011), a popular variegated option within the Caron Cakes range.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern is worked on US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles, with the small blanket requiring an 80 cm circular needle length and the large blanket requiring a 100 cm length to accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the blanket grows outward. Optional double-pointed needles may be used for the center rounds if preferred. The working gauge is 10 stitches over 4 inches in stocking stitch after blocking, which is standard for aran-weight yarn and helps determine the final finished dimensions of the completed blanket.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round on circular needles and familiar with basic increase and decrease techniques. The geometric star motif requires attention to marker placement and pattern repeats, making it an engaging project that builds confidence in shaping and stitch manipulation without being overly complex for experienced beginners.
