720 Poet's Corner Shawl – Knitting Pattern by Jess Gagnon in Valley Yarns Hatfield

The Poet's Corner Shawl is a beautifully feminine, lightweight knitted shawl designed by Jess Gagnon. This pattern produces a large, elegant triangular shawl with finished measurements of 64 inches wide and 21 inches deep, making it a generous, drape-worthy accessory perfect for layering over shoulders or wrapping around the neck. The design is rated advanced beginner, making it an ideal next step for knitters who are comfortable with basic techniques and ready to explore simple lace work.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single triangular shawl with three distinct sections: a Stockinette body, a lace panel, and a ruffled bind-off edge. The combination of these three elements gives the shawl a delicate, layered aesthetic — smooth and lustrous through the body, eye-catching through the lace band, and playfully feminine along the ruffled hem. The finished piece is light enough to wear in warmer months yet refined enough to complement dressy or casual outfits alike.

Construction and Technique

The Poet's Corner Shawl is worked top-down and flat, meaning it is knitted back and forth in rows on circular needles rather than in the round. Construction begins with just 3 cast-on stitches at the top center of the shawl and grows outward through consistent increases on every right-side row. Specifically, six stitches are increased on every RS row — two at each outer edge and two flanking a central spine stitch — creating the classic triangular shawl silhouette. Stitch markers are placed early in the pattern to track the central stitch and guide the increases throughout.

Working flat on 40-inch US size 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles is a practical choice here: the long cable accommodates the large stitch count that builds as the shawl grows, without the constraints of straight needles. The top-down approach allows knitters to try the shawl on as they go and adjust length if desired.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The main body of the shawl is worked in Stockinette — knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows. This smooth fabric beautifully showcases the color and natural luster of the yarn.
  • Kfb (knit front and back): The primary increase stitch used throughout the pattern. The knitter works into the front of a stitch, leaves it on the left needle, then knits into the back — creating two stitches from one. This increase is used at both edges and at the center spine on every RS row.
  • Lace stitch (yo, k2, pass yo over k2): The lace section introduces a simple but striking stitch pattern. A yarn-over is created, two stitches are knitted, and then the yarn-over is passed over those two knitted stitches. This creates a subtle, repeating lace texture across a broad band of the shawl. Even knitters new to lace will find this repeat approachable and rhythmic.
  • Ruffle edge: The final section uses a dramatic kfb across every stitch on a right-side row, instantly doubling the stitch count from 459 to 918 stitches. A few rows of Stockinette follow before a loose bind-off, creating a full, ruffled hem that adds movement and a romantic finish to the shawl.

Lace Technique

Lace knitting involves deliberate increases (yarn-overs) and decreases worked in combination to create decorative openwork patterns. In the Poet's Corner Shawl, the lace section uses a compact, self-contained repeat — the yarn-over is immediately consumed by being passed over the following two knit stitches — which means the stitch count continues to grow only through the established edge and center increases. This makes the lace section easier to track than many traditional lace patterns, as there are no additional yarn-over increases to manage within the lace repeat itself. The lace band spans a significant portion of the lower shawl body, drawing the eye downward and adding visual interest without overwhelming the simplicity of the overall design.
