687 Grayson Baby Set – Knitting Pattern for Babies in Valley Yarns Haydenville

The 687 Grayson Baby Set, designed by Kirsten Hipsky, is a coordinated collection of three knitted baby items: a striped chevron blanket, a top-down pullover sweater, and a ribbed hat with chevron accents. The set is worked in Valley Yarns Haydenville, a superwash-treated worsted weight yarn, and uses a soft three-color palette of Lt Grey (color 04), White (color 01), and Seafoam (color 20) to create delicate, repeating chevron stripe details throughout all three pieces. Rated advanced beginner, this pattern is an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable with basic techniques and ready to explore simple colorwork, top-down construction, and working both flat and in the round.

Yarn and Materials

All three pieces are knitted in Valley Yarns Haydenville, a worsted weight yarn composed of 60% Superwash Merino / 40% Acrylic Microfiber, with approximately 220 yards per 100g skein. The superwash treatment makes the finished items machine washable — a highly practical feature for baby garments. The three colorways used are:

  • Color 04 Lt Grey – the main color (MC), used most heavily across all three pieces
  • Color 01 White – the first contrast color (CC1), used in chevron rounds
  • Color 20 Seafoam – the second contrast color (CC2), used in additional chevron rounds

When knitting all three projects together, the pattern requires 5 (5, 6, 6) skeins of MC and 1 skein each of CC1 and CC2, varying by the size of the pullover chosen.

Needles required include:

  • US size 7 (4.50mm) 16" circular needles for the pullover yoke and hat
  • US size 7 (4.50mm) double pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round on smaller circumferences
  • US size 7 (4.50mm) 32" circular needles for the blanket, which is worked flat
  • US size 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles for the hat ribbing

Gauge is 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch in Stockinette stitch using the larger needles.

The Blanket

The blanket finishes at 28" wide and 36" long, making it a generous lap or stroller blanket. It is worked flat on 32" circular needles using the main color Lt Grey as the base, with chevron stripe accents in White and Seafoam woven throughout. The blanket requires 4 skeins of MC, 1 skein of CC1, and 1 skein of CC2. The chevron stripe pattern creates a visually engaging zigzag texture through the use of paired increases and decreases — specifically right-leaning increases (RLinc), left-leaning increases (LLinc), k2tog, and ssk — which shift stitches laterally to form the characteristic V-shaped chevron motif without changing the overall stitch count.

The Pullover

The pullover is available in four sizes: 18 (20, 22, 24) inches in finished chest circumference, designed to fit babies and toddlers aged 0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years, and 2–3 years. The pattern is shown in the smallest size. It is constructed top-down and worked in the round, beginning at the yoke with a cast-on of 47 (48, 45, 46) stitches on a 16" US size 7 circular needle. Top-down construction is a popular method for baby garments because it allows the knitter to try the piece on as they go and easily adjust the body and sleeve lengths without
