525 Hidden Hills Pullover – Knitting Pattern for Women by Elisabeth Parker

The 525 Hidden Hills Pullover is a fitted, round-yoke colorwork pullover designed by Elisabeth Parker for Valley Yarns. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a classic women's jumper with a sophisticated Fair Isle yoke, clean turned hems, and a flattering silhouette. It is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized to fit finished bust measurements of 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, with the sample shown in size 36 inches.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a women's pullover jumper with a round yoke featuring stranded colorwork in a simple Fair Isle style. The body is fitted through the torso, and the neckline is finished with gentle ruching for a soft, feminine detail. Turned hems at the cuffs and lower body add a polished, professional finish with a subtle pop of contrasting color on the inside fold. The overall aesthetic is understated and elegant, making excellent use of the naturally heathered tones of the specified yarn.

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction: Both the body and the sleeves are begun at the lower edges and worked upward, a method that gives knitters excellent control over length adjustments before joining pieces for the yoke.
  • Seamless and worked in the round: The body is cast on and joined immediately, then worked in the round as a tube up to the underarm bind-offs. The sleeves are similarly worked in the round on double pointed needles. This eliminates the need for side or sleeve seams, resulting in a smooth, comfortable finish.
  • Turned hems: Both the body and the sleeves begin with a hem worked in Color B (Chestnut Heather), followed by a turning round worked in purl to create a crisp fold line. The hem is then folded to the inside, creating a neat, double-layered edge with a contrasting color visible only at the fold — a refined tailoring detail commonly seen in higher-end knitwear.
  • Stranded colorwork (Fair Isle): The round yoke features stranded knitting using all three colors — Color A (Dark Olive Heather), Color B (Chestnut Heather), and Color C (Fawn). In stranded or Fair Isle knitting, two or more yarn colors are carried across each row, with the non-working yarn floated loosely across the back of the fabric. The pattern uses single-stitch color designations (A1, B1, C1) for precise colorwork placement.
  • Worked flat (for yoke shaping): Certain sections of the pattern are worked flat, meaning back and forth in rows rather than in the round, which is typical when managing yoke shaping or neckline construction in round-yoke garments.
  • Sleeve shaping with increases: Sleeves are shaped with a make-one (m1) increase on each side of a central marker every sixth round, repeated 15 to 23 times depending on size, creating a gradual, well-fitted taper from cuff to upper arm.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary fabric stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, flat knit surface that shows off the heathered yarn beautifully.
  • Purl stitch: Used to create the turning round for the hems, forming a clean fold line at the lower body and cuffs.
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used in shaping, particularly around the yoke and neckline.
  • Make one (m1): A lifted increase used in sleeve shaping to add stitches gradually and invisibly along the sleeve length.
  • Stranded colorwork stitches: Single knit stitches worked in designated colors (A1, B1, C1) following a colorwork chart or written instructions to build the Fair Isle yoke pattern.
