513 Geneva Pullover – Seamless Top-Down Cable Knitting Pattern for Women by Kirsten Hipsky
The 513 Geneva Pullover is a women's cropped pullover knitting pattern designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published under the Valley Yarns brand. It is a beautifully balanced project that combines the satisfying texture of cable knitting with the practical ease of seamless, top-down construction, making it an appealing choice for knitters who want a wearable, stylish sweater without the finishing work of seaming. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated intermediate in difficulty.
What Is Being Made
The finished garment is a cropped pullover jumper worked seamlessly from the top down in the round. Its relaxed, unstructured yoke and cable detailing give it a contemporary aesthetic that layers easily over other pieces. The pattern is offered in five sizes with finished bust measurements of 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, and the sample shown is knitted in size 36 inches. Because the construction is top-down, knitters can try the sweater on as they go and easily customize both the body length and sleeve length to suit their personal preference — a particularly useful feature highlighted in the pattern itself.
Construction Techniques
- Top-down construction: The pullover begins at the yoke with a cast-on of 80 stitches, immediately joined in the round. Working from the top down means the knitter shapes the yoke, then separates the sleeves from the body, and continues downward — all without ever picking up a seam.
- Seamless and worked in the round: The entire garment is knitted in the round, eliminating the need for seaming. Stitch markers divide the round into sleeve and body sections from the very first round, keeping the structure clear and manageable.
- Raglan-style yoke shaping: Increases are worked on either side of each marker every other round, expanding the sleeve and body sections simultaneously. Sleeve sections grow to 48, 56, 64, 72, or 80 stitches and body sections to 72, 80, 88, 96, or 104 stitches depending on the size.
- Cable integration in the yoke: Rather than a plain stockinette yoke, cables are introduced during the increase rounds, creating a textured, decorative yoke that flows naturally into the body of the sweater.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
- Stockinette stitch: The base fabric of the garment, used throughout the body and sleeves. Gauge is measured in stockinette at 4 stitches and 6 rows per inch.
- Front Cross Cable (FC): Worked by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle and holding to the front, knitting 2 stitches from the left needle, then knitting the 2 held stitches from the cable needle. This produces a left-leaning cable cross.
- Back Cross Cable (BC): Worked by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle and holding to the back, knitting 2 stitches from the left needle, then knitting the 2 held stitches from the cable needle. This produces a right-leaning cable cross.
- Make 1 Left (m1L): A lifted increase worked by inserting the tip of the left needle under the running strand between stitches from front to back and knitting into the back of that strand, creating a left-leaning increase without a hole.
- Make 1 Right (m1R): A lifted increase worked by inserting the tip of the left needle under the running strand from back to front and knitting into the front of that strand, creating a right-leaning increase without a hole.
The cables are arranged in a repeating 16-round sequence within the yoke. FC crosses appear on Round 4 and BC crosses appear on Round 12, with plain knit rounds and increase rounds filling the intervals. This alternating cable pattern creates a visually dynamic, interlocking texture across the yoke. The repeat is worked a total of 2 to 4 times depending on the size, with partial repeats added as needed.
