Product Description

Our owner, Kathy Elkins, had asked me to work out the math for a simple cowl using her favourite cross-hatch pattern and I knew the silky soft Valley Yarns Charlemont would be the perfect yarn to pair with this stitch! One skein is enough yardage to make the cowl in both lengths.

This pattern is available as a PDF download.

392 Math for Kathy - Cowl Crochet Pattern for Women

Project Overview

The 392 Math for Kathy is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl designed by Sara Delaney for Valley Yarns. This pattern showcases the Charlemont yarn with an elegant cross-hatch stitch pattern. The design offers versatility with two finished length options—a standard 20-inch circumference and an extended 50-inch length—both achievable with a single skein of yarn, making it an efficient and economical project.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a seamless cowl, a tubular neckwear accessory designed to be worn draped around the neck or shoulders. The cowl is worked in the round to form a continuous loop, eliminating the need for seaming. The cross-hatch stitch pattern creates visual texture and interest while remaining accessible to beginner crocheters.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Seamless construction: The cowl is worked in continuous rounds, joined with slip stitches, creating a finished garment without seams
  • Worked flat concept applied in the round: While technically worked in rounds, the stitch pattern creates a fabric that lies flat and drapes elegantly
  • Slip stitch joining: Used to connect rounds and maintain the tubular structure

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch): Foundation stitch used to create the initial ring of 168 or 420 stitches depending on desired length
  • Double crochet (dc): Primary stitch creating the structure and body of the cross-hatch pattern, worked in groups of three
  • Single crochet (sc): Used strategically within the pattern to create the cross-hatch effect by skipping stitches and creating visual breaks
  • Slip stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and complete the circular construction

Stitch Pattern Details

The cross-hatch pattern is created through a repeating sequence of stacked double crochets alternating with single crochet stitches and chain spaces. The pattern repeat involves skipping stitches to create the characteristic cross-hatch visual effect. The gauge is measured as 1 group of stitches and 3 rows equaling 1 inch in the pattern stitch, allowing crocheters to verify proper sizing before committing to the full project.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Charlemont in a 4-ply weight yarn. One skein provides 439 yards and 100 grams of fiber, sufficient yardage to complete either the 20-inch or 50-inch cowl length. The yarn composition is 60% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Mulberry Silk, and 20% Polyamide, creating a blend that offers the warmth and elasticity of merino wool enhanced by the lustrous sheen and smooth texture of silk, with polyamide adding durability and shape retention. The featured colorway is Teal Blue, a kettle-dyed color that adds depth and visual interest to the cross-hatch pattern.

Tools Required

A US size D/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook is used to work this pattern. This hook size is standard for 4-ply weight yarn and contributes to the proper gauge and drape of the finished cowl.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated for beginner crocheters. The stitches used—chain, double crochet, single crochet, and slip stitch—are fundamental crochet techniques. The repeating pattern structure makes it easy to establish a rhythm, and the seamless in-the-round construction, while requiring attention to tension and joining, is manageable for those new to crochet.

Design Features

The cross-hatch stitch pattern creates an open, textured fabric that is visually interesting while remaining lightweight and drapeable. The pattern's efficiency—providing two length options from a single skein—demonstrates thoughtful design that maximizes yarn utility. The use of Valley Yarns Charlemont showcases how the silk and merino blend creates beautiful stitch definition in the cross-hatch pattern.
