Pattern Summary: 378 Tina's Hoodie – Cardigan Knitting Pattern for Women by Kirsten Hipsky

Tina's Hoodie is a women's hooded cardigan knitting pattern designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published under the Valley Yarns brand. This intermediate-level pattern produces a cozy, structured pullover-style cardigan featuring a hood, elegant cable panels, and a flattering ribbed body — a versatile wardrobe staple worked in a classic worsted weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Valley Yarns Williamstown, a worsted weight yarn well-suited to showcasing both textured stitch patterns and defined cable work.

Construction Overview

Tina's Hoodie is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat method, meaning the garment begins at the lower hem and is knitted upward in flat rows rather than in the round. This approach gives knitters straightforward access to right-side and wrong-side row management, making shaping and stitch pattern placement easier to follow. The garment is available in six sizes, with stitch counts ranging from 146 to 206 stitches across the lower body, accommodating a wide range of women's measurements.

Stitch Patterns and Techniques

Ribbing

The lower hem begins with a 2x2 ribbing section worked for approximately 2 inches. This classic ribbing — alternating knit 2 and purl 2 stitches across both right-side and wrong-side rows — provides a neat, elastic edge that helps the cardigan sit smoothly at the hips without flaring or rolling.

Garter Rib

The main body fabric is worked in a Garter Rib pattern, which operates over a multiple of 6 stitches. On wrong-side rows, the pattern is worked as K1, p4, k1, while right-side rows are knitted entirely across. This combination of knit and purl stitches creates a subtly textured, semi-elastic fabric that is lighter and more visually interesting than plain stockinette, while still providing a smooth canvas that complements the cable panels.

Cable Panel

The standout feature of Tina's Hoodie is its 14-stitch cable panel, which appears symmetrically on both the left and right sides of the body, framing the garter rib section. The cable is worked over an 8-row repeat and uses four distinct cable crossings:

  • LC (Left Cross) – a left-leaning cable crossing that twists stitches to the left
  • RC (Right Cross) – a right-leaning cable crossing that twists stitches to the right
  • FC (Front Cross) – a front cable crossing used at the center of the panel on Row 8

The cable panel is bordered by single edge stitches on each side and features a dynamic, converging cable motif. Over the 8-row repeat, the cable crossings move progressively inward — from the outer edges on Row 2, stepping closer together on Rows 4 and 6, and finally meeting at the center with a front cross on Row 8. Wrong-side rows throughout the cable panel are worked as K1, p12, k1, maintaining clean purl columns on the reverse. This type of converging cable creates a visually striking, braided or diamond-like appearance that adds sophistication to the garment's silhouette.

Waist Shaping

The pattern incorporates waist shaping worked through strategic use of markers. Two sets of markers — referred to as A markers and B markers — are placed at cast-on to delineate the cable panels, side sections, and back body. As the work progresses past the ribbing, the waist shaping rows align the cable panels between the A markers, the garter rib across the body between B markers, and maintain the 2-stitch selvedge edges on each side. This structured marker system ensures that the cable and garter rib patterns remain correctly positioned while shaping is simultaneously worked to create a fitted waist.

Materials

The pattern is designed specifically for Valley Yarns Williamstown, a worsted weight yarn that provides the stitch definition needed for cables and the comfortable drape suited to a hooded cardigan. As with all worsted weight projects, knitters
