What is Being Made
The 21st of June Socks are a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create a pair of fitted adult socks. This intermediate-level project produces wearable footwear available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The finished socks feature adjustable foot length, making them customizable to individual measurements. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with small needles and circular construction techniques.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The pattern offers three size options to accommodate different foot sizes:
- Adult Small: Foot circumference of 7.5 inches (19 cm), adjustable foot length of 9 inches (23 cm)
- Adult Medium: Foot circumference of 8 inches (20 cm), adjustable foot length of 10 inches (25 cm)
- Adult Large: Foot circumference of 9 inches (23 cm), adjustable foot length of 11.25 inches (28.5 cm)
The adjustable foot length feature allows knitters to customize the sock to their exact measurements, ensuring a perfect fit regardless of individual foot proportions.
Knitting Techniques Used
The 21st of June Socks employ several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic sock appearance. Knitters will work in the round using either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the magic loop method with circular needles, both of which are essential techniques for sock construction. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques for shaping, including knit two together (K2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases, which are commonly used in sock heel and toe shaping. Additionally, the pattern uses yarn overs (YO), suggesting decorative or functional stitch details. Knitters will also employ knit through the back loop (Ktbl) techniques for specific stitch variations.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used throughout the 21st of June Socks is stockinette stitch, worked in the round to create a smooth, elastic fabric ideal for sock wear. The pattern is worked at a gauge of 32 stitches and 42 rounds to 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, which is a standard gauge for fingering weight yarn. Key decreasing stitches include K2tog (knit two stitches together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit), both of which are used for shaping the heel and toe sections. The pattern also incorporates purl stitches (P) and P2tog (purl two stitches together) for specific construction details. Yarn overs (YO) are included in the pattern, which create small holes or decorative elements. Knit through the back loop (Ktbl) is used selectively to create twisted stitches that add texture or prevent laddering between needles.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The 21st of June Socks are designed to be knitted with fingering weight yarn, a fine yarn weight that is standard for sock knitting. The pattern requires approximately 400 meters (yards) per 100 grams of yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires approximately 175 yards (160 meters, 40 grams), Medium requires approximately 208 yards (190 meters, 48 grams), and Large requires approximately 258 yards (236 meters, 59 grams). The actual yardage may vary depending on individual gauge and yarn characteristics.
Needles required are US #1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles for the magic loop method, sized to achieve the specified gauge. Knitters should select needles based on their personal tension to meet the required gauge of 32 stitches and 42 rounds to 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Additional notions needed include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and grafting the toe closure.
