Product Description

I love snowflakes, they are extraordinarily intricate and hexagonal in shape and it is said that no 2 snowflakes are alike. Their beauty is hard to replicate but I like to try!

This snowflake can be made in any yarn provided you use a suitably sized crochet hook. I used 4ply and a 3mm hook; the snowflake is about 12cm (4¾”) across at the widest point and uses about 15m of yarn.

Pattern is written in UK and US terms, is charted and has some step photos to help you.

This is included in the Advent CAL 2019, information can be found in my Ravelry group

2019 Snowflake by Agrarian Artisan

Project Overview

The 2019 Snowflake is a crochet decoration pattern designed by Agrarian Artisan. This intermediate-level project celebrates the natural geometry and intricate beauty of snowflakes, capturing their hexagonal structure in a handmade crochet ornament. The finished snowflake measures approximately 12 centimeters (4¾ inches) across at its widest point, making it an ideal size for holiday decorations, gift embellishments, or seasonal display pieces.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight worked with a 3mm crochet hook. The project requires approximately 15 meters of yarn, making it an economical choice for creating multiple snowflakes. The designer notes that this snowflake can be adapted to different yarn weights by selecting an appropriately sized crochet hook, allowing crafters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended finished dimensions.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The 2019 Snowflake pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and techniques:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – the foundational stitch used to create the base structure
  • Slip stitch (ss) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
  • Double crochet (dc) – listed in both UK and US terminology, representing different stitch heights depending on regional crochet conventions
  • Half treble (htr) – known as half double crochet in US terms, providing mid-range stitch height
  • Treble (tr) – called double crochet in US terminology, creating taller stitches for openwork effects
  • Picot detail – a decorative technique created by chaining 3 stitches and slip stitching to the 3rd chain from the hook, adding delicate embellishment typical of snowflake designs

Pattern Format and Instructions

The pattern is provided in a comprehensive downloadable PDF format with multiple versions to accommodate international crocheters. Instructions are written in both UK crochet terminology (page 2) and US crochet terminology (page 5), recognizing that stitch names and heights differ between regions. A visual crochet chart is included on page 4, providing a graphical representation of the pattern sequence for crafters who prefer working from charts. This multi-format approach ensures accessibility for crocheters regardless of their regional background or preferred working method.

Design Inspiration

The 2019 Snowflake pattern draws inspiration from the natural world, specifically the geometric perfection and infinite variation found in real snowflakes. The designer emphasizes the hexagonal structure inherent to snowflake formation and the remarkable fact that no two snowflakes in nature are identical. While replicating this natural complexity in crochet presents a creative challenge, the pattern successfully translates snowflake aesthetics into a wearable and displayable textile decoration.

Versatile Applications

The finished snowflake ornament offers multiple decorative possibilities. Crafters can use completed snowflakes as hanging decorations for holiday displays, attach them to gifts as elegant embellishments, incorporate them into garland projects, or arrange them as seasonal home décor elements. The intermediate difficulty level and modest yarn requirements make this pattern suitable for both experienced crocheters seeking a quick project and developing crafters ready to expand their skills.
