1:12th Scale Royal Navy 1940s Dolls House Knitting Pattern Set

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern set by Frances Powell creates authentic 1940s Royal Navy miniature garments designed to fit 6-inch (15 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The collection includes three separate pieces: a polo neck sweater, a balaclava helmet, and sea boot stockings with optional stocking tops for wellies. Each item is historically accurate to the 1939-1945 period and scaled appropriately for 1:12th scale dolls house miniatures.

Garment Details and Finished Dimensions

  • Polo Neck Sweater: 6 cm (2½ inches) from neck to hem, 4 cm (1½ inches) across chest, with 6 cm (2½ inches) sleeve length from shoulder to wrist
  • Balaclava: 2 cm (¾ inch) across neck opening, 3 cm (1¼ inches) from neck to top of head
  • Sea Boot Stockings: 2.5 cm (1 inch) foot length, 4.5 cm (1¾ inches) from heel to turned-down top, with alternative instructions provided for stocking tops designed to fit inside wellies

Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for miniature garment construction. The primary stitch used throughout is stockinette stitch (also called stocking stitch), which alternates knit rows with purl rows to create the classic smooth knitted fabric. Pattern shaping utilizes k2tog (knit two stitches together) and p2tog (purl two stitches together) decreases to form fitted garment pieces. Small stitch holders or safety pins are used to hold stitches during construction, a standard technique for managing multiple sections in dolls house miniature knitting.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

All pieces are worked in 1-ply yarn at cobweb weight, the finest yarn classification suitable for 1:12th scale work. Specific yardage requirements are minimal due to the miniature scale: the polo neck sweater requires 50 metres (56 yards), the balaclava requires 12 metres (14 yards), and the sea boot stockings require 25 metres (28 yards). Knitting is worked on size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, among the smallest needles available, essential for achieving the delicate gauge required in dolls house miniature knitting.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations: k for knit, p for purl, st for stitch, sst for stockinette stitch, beg for beginning, k2tog for knit two together, and p2tog for purl two together. Notably, gauge is not critical for this pattern, as dolls house dolls vary in size, allowing crafters flexibility in their finished measurements. The pattern is designed to work with the specific doll proportions available to individual makers.
