What Is Being Made

This is a miniature knitted rabbit toy designed for 1/12th scale dolls house displays. Created by designer Frances Powell, the finished rabbit stands just 1½ inches (4 centimeters) tall, making it an ideal accessory for dollhouse rooms and scenes. The toy is suitable for intermediate knitters and can be completed as a standalone decorative piece or as part of a larger dolls house collection.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The rabbit is constructed entirely using garter stitch, which means every row is knitted (no purl rows). This straightforward stitch technique creates a dense, textured fabric ideal for small toys, as it produces a firm fabric that holds its shape well at miniature scales. The simplicity of working in garter stitch throughout makes this project accessible while still requiring intermediate-level skills for managing the extremely fine gauge and small needles involved.

The toy is built using basic shaping techniques including increases (working twice into a stitch to form two stitches) and decreases (working two stitches together to form one stitch). These shaping methods allow the knitter to create the rabbit's body contours and define different sections. The pattern also employs slip stitches for joining sections seamlessly, contributing to the polished appearance of the finished toy.

Materials and Tools

This miniature project requires size 19 (1.00 mm/US 5/0) knitting needles, which are extremely fine needles suited to working with cobweb-weight yarn. The primary yarn is 13 yards (12 metres) of grey 1-ply wool in cobweb weight, which provides the main body color. Additional small amounts of white wool and pink wool are needed for details, along with black wool for embroidering the eyes, nose, and mouth features. A small amount of stuffing material is required to fill the toy and give it dimension and structure.

The cobweb weight yarn is exceptionally fine and delicate, requiring careful handling and precise needle control. This yarn weight, combined with the tiny needles, creates the miniature scale necessary for authentic dolls house proportions. Gauge is noted as not critical for this project, as toys can be adjusted to various sizes depending on yarn weight and needle size choices, though the specified materials will produce the intended 1½-inch finished height.
