Written pattern. TWO patterns are included in the price the lilac dress is the original Farthing Patterns FP 22, the turquoise dress has a reworked deeper V-neck.

Materials required: Dress - Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles, 65 yards/62.5 metres 1-ply yarn, stitch holder. Snood - Size 16 (1.5mm/ US 000) knitting needles, 12.5 metres 1-ply yarn or sewing cotton (makes work more open), very thin elastic such as shirring elastic, 0.75mm crochet hook (optional).

Approximate finished sizes: Dress - 1-inch/2.5 cm wide at waist, sleeve 1¾-inches/4.5 cm long, height – 4¼-inches/10.5 cm. Snood - 1-inch/2.5 cm deep by ¾-inch/2 cm wide after elastic has been added.

Gauge – Gauge is not important as dolls house dolls (like humans) vary greatly in size and proportions.

Historical notes: The dress is designed for the younger woman with a wide swing skirt; the ribbing would fit tight to the body with a slightly fuller upper bodice. This dress dates from 1939, before wool rationing.

1:12th Scale Ladies Knitted Dress and Snood c. 1939

About This Pattern

This downloadable PDF pattern by designer Frances Powell creates a historically-inspired ladies dress and matching snood accessory in 1:12th scale, sized to fit a 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls house doll. The design references authentic 1939 fashion, featuring a youthful silhouette with a wide swing skirt characteristic of that era. The original garment was knitted in newly developed tweed yarn, offering insight into the textile innovations of the period.

The Dress

Construction and Design: This knitted dress is an intermediate-level project that combines fitted bodice shaping with a generously proportioned swing skirt. The design captures the relaxed elegance of late 1930s women's fashion, with sleeves measuring 1¾ inches (4.5 cm) in length and an overall garment height of 4¼ inches (10.5 cm). The waist width measures approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm), with the skirt providing volume and movement characteristic of the period.

Techniques and Stitches: The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. Construction methods include shaping for the bodice and skirt expansion to achieve the distinctive swing silhouette. Stitch techniques are worked in fine gauge knitting appropriate to the delicate scale of miniature garment construction.

Materials and Yarn: The dress requires Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles and 65 yards (62.5 metres) of 1-ply yarn in cobweb weight—an exceptionally fine yarn weight that enables precise detail work at miniature scale. A stitch holder is needed for managing stitches during construction. The pattern notes that the original design was created in newly developed tweed yarn, though crafters may substitute other 1-ply options.

The Snood

Construction and Design: The snood is a coordinating hair accessory measuring 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep by ¾ inch (2 cm) wide after elastic has been incorporated. This accessory completes the 1939-inspired ensemble and adds authentic period detail to the dolls house doll's styling.

Techniques and Stitches: The snood is constructed using knitting techniques that create an open, mesh-like fabric. The pattern includes the option to use a 0.75mm crochet hook for finishing details, allowing flexibility in construction approach. The openwork structure is achieved through yarn selection and stitch patterning.

Materials and Yarn: The snood requires Size 16 (1.5mm/US 000) knitting needles and 12.5 metres of 1-ply yarn or sewing cotton. The pattern notes that sewing cotton creates a more open fabric structure, offering crafters a choice based on desired drape and appearance. Very thin elastic such as shirring elastic is essential for securing the snood to the doll's head, and a 0.75mm crochet hook is optional for finishing work.

Gauge and Sizing Notes

The pattern explicitly states that gauge is not critical for this project, as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size and proportions—much like humans. This approach allows crafters flexibility in adaptation to their specific doll's measurements, making the pattern accessible even if exact gauge matching is not achieved.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with extremely fine needles and yarn weights. The miniature scale and delicate materials require patience and precision, but the pattern provides clear guidance for crafters seeking to create historically accurate 1:12 scale fashion accessories.
