1:12th Scale Grandma's Bedroom Knitting Collection by Frances Powell
This downloadable PDF pattern collection features four authentic miniature knitted pieces designed to furnish a 1:12th scale dollhouse bedroom set in the style of the 1940s era. Created by designer Frances Powell, the project combines historical accuracy with intricate miniature knitting techniques, making it ideal for advanced beginner to intermediate crafters seeking detailed dollhouse accessories.
Project Overview
The collection recreates period-appropriate bedroom textiles and furnishings using cobweb-weight 1-ply wool and extremely fine needles. Each piece requires precise tension control and careful attention to detail, reflecting authentic vintage bedroom décor from the 1830s-1940s period. The patterns demonstrate how traditional knitting techniques scale down for miniature applications in dollhouse design.
Blanket (c. 1945)
A foundational bedding piece knitted with Size 14 (2 mm/US size 0) knitting needles using 65 metres (70 yards) of 1-ply wool. This blanket serves as the base layer for the bedroom ensemble and requires careful gauge management to achieve the correct miniature proportions for 1:12th scale display.
Patchwork Cushion (c. 1943)
A decorative accent piece featuring colorwork knitting in pink, blue, and green. Construction requires:
- Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for the main fabric
- 12 metres (13 yards) each of pink and blue 1-ply wool for the primary patchwork sections
- 25 metres (28 yards) of green 1-ply wool for contrast areas
- Small amount of Burgundy wool for embroidered embellishment details
- Stuffing material to create a three-dimensional cushion form
This piece demonstrates multi-color knitting techniques at miniature scale and includes embroidery work for added texture and visual interest.
Hot Water Bottle Cover (c. 1943)
A functional vintage accessory knitted with Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles using 12 metres (13 yards) of 1-ply wool. The cover features 2 small buttons or beads as closures, adding authentic period detailing. This piece showcases how practical household items were miniaturized for dollhouse settings.
Single Bedcover (c. 1830-1940s)
The most complex project in the collection, this bedcover features a distinctive geometric patchwork design composed of 98 colored triangles and 10 ecru triangles. Construction specifications include:
- Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles throughout
- Oddments of assorted wool for the triangle patchwork sections (approximately 1 yard/1 metre of wool per triangle)
- 12 metres (13 yards) of 1-ply wool in Ecru for triangle components
- 100 metres (110 yards) of 1-ply wool for the border frame
- Approximately 225 metres (244 yards) total if knitting the entire piece in a single color
This project demonstrates advanced patchwork assembly techniques at miniature scale, requiring careful color planning and precise triangle construction to achieve the historical bedcover aesthetic.
Techniques and Stitches
The collection employs fundamental knitting stitches executed at miniature scale with cobweb-weight yarn. Techniques include basic stockinette stitch construction, color work integration, embroidery embellishment, and patchwork assembly. The patterns require strong tension control and familiarity with working with extremely fine needles and delicate yarn weights. Stuffing and finishing techniques are essential for creating dimensional pieces like the cushion and hot water bottle cover.
Materials Summary
All projects utilize 1-ply wool yarn in cobweb weight, the finest standard yarn classification, requiring Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) and Size 14 (2 mm/US size 0
