1:12th Scale Tray Cloth and Chair Backs Set by Frances Powell
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a complete miniature textile set designed for 1:12th scale dollhouses and doll furniture. The set includes three coordinated pieces: decorative chair backs, a tray cloth or runner suitable for dressers, bookcases, and tables, and chair arm covers. Each piece is meticulously sized for dollhouse interiors, with the chair backs measuring approximately 1 inch by 1½ inches, the tray cloth 1 inch wide with adjustable length, and chair arm covers measuring ¾ inch by 1 inch. This pattern is ideal for adding authentic textile details to miniature room settings and doll furniture displays.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques scaled to work with extremely fine materials. The pattern utilizes basic stitch manipulation including yarn overs to create decorative openwork details typical of miniature textile design. Techniques such as yarn forward (yfd) and yarn round needle (yrn) are used to generate lace-like effects appropriate for dollhouse-scale textiles. The pattern also incorporates decreasing methods including knit two stitches together (k2tog) and knit two stitches together through the back of the loops (k2togtbl) to shape the pieces and create refined edges suitable for miniature scale.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit stitches for textural variation
- Slip stitch (sl) – slipping stitches purl wise without working them, used for edge finishing and stitch management
- Yarn overs (yfd and yrn) – creating decorative holes and lace patterns characteristic of fine miniature textiles
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit two together through back of loops (k2togtbl) – a left-leaning decrease for refined shaping
Materials
This pattern requires extremely fine materials appropriate for 1:12th scale work. You will need one 5-gram ball of No. 80 crochet cotton or No. 70 tatting thread, which provides sufficient yardage for the complete set. The yarn weight is thread-weight, the finest category for knitting projects. Needles required are size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, which are among the smallest standard knitting needles available and essential for working at this miniature scale. Gauge is not critical for this project, making it more forgiving for crafters new to miniature knitting, though precision in stitch count remains important for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Pattern Details
Designed by Frances Powell and copyrighted in 2011, this pattern is part of the Buttercup Miniatures collection. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to print and reference the pattern while working on their miniature pieces. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that while basic knitting knowledge is required, the techniques are not overly complex, making this an accessible project for knitters looking to expand into miniature textile design. The adjustable length option for the tray cloth runner provides flexibility in customizing the piece to fit specific dollhouse furniture dimensions.
