Project Overview

This advanced knitting pattern creates a historically-inspired 13th century knight's chainmail ensemble designed to fit 5½ to 6-inch (14-15 cm) tall dollhouse dolls. The set comprises three separate pieces: knitted leggings, a hauberk (mail shirt), and a coif (mail hood), all crafted using fine metallic thread to authentically replicate the appearance of medieval chain mail armor at miniature scale.

What is Being Made

• Leggings: Form-fitting leg coverings measuring approximately 2 inches (5 cm) in finished height, secured with thin brown cord at the back and integrated with a belt
• Hauberk: A mail shirt extending approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) from base to neck, representing the primary protective garment worn over the body
• Coif: A protective mail hood measuring approximately 1½ inches (4 cm) from the chest point to the top of the head, covering the head and neck area

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs specialized knitting techniques suited to miniature chainmail construction. The design utilizes stitch holders during the hauberk and coif sections to manage active stitches while shaping different garment sections. The knitting creates a textured fabric that visually mimics the interlocking rings characteristic of authentic chain mail armor. The pattern requires careful tension control and precision work, as the extremely fine gauge produces delicate, detailed results that stretch considerably during blocking and finishing.

Materials Required

Needles: Size 18 (1.2 mm/US 4/0) knitting needles throughout all three components, chosen for their compatibility with thread-weight yarn.

Thread: DMC Fil argent mi-fin or comparable fine single-strand metallic thread in silver tone. Material requirements include ½ spool (30 metres) for leggings, ¾ spool (45 metres) for the hauberk, and ¼ spool (15 metres) for the coif. One complete 60-metre spool provides sufficient metallic thread for both the hauberk and coif combined.
