Product Description

Valley Yarns Duskywing is a cosy and squishy women’s striped jumper knit in Montague. This boxy fit, long sleeves, and graduated textured purl stripe pattern is the perfect layering piece for these breezy spring days. The jumper is knit in the round from the bottom up, with narrow textured stripes spaced at graduated intervals. The sleeves are worked separately in the round, then joined to the body at the beginning of the yoke and worked together to the neck. Montague from Valley Yarns is a gorgeously soft cotton yarn with a bouclé look that will create fabrics you’ll love.

1080 Duskywing – Striped Pullover Knitting Pattern for Women by Julie Turjoman

The 1080 Duskywing is a women's pullover sweater knitting pattern designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns. This intermediate-level pattern produces a relaxed, boxy-fit jumper featuring a graduated textured purl stripe design, long sleeves, and a comfortable silhouette with 8–10 inches of positive ease. It is worked entirely in Valley Yarns Montague, a 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight, making it an ideal choice for transitional seasons — particularly those blustery spring days when a cozy, breathable layer is exactly what's needed.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a long-sleeved striped pullover (also called a jumper) for women. It is available in nine sizes ranging from XS through 5XL, with finished bust measurements spanning approximately 35¾ inches to 69½ inches. The garment length ranges from 24½ inches to 28 inches depending on size. The shown sample was knitted in Size S. The boxy fit and generous ease make this sweater a versatile wardrobe staple and an excellent layering piece.

Design Details and Construction

One of the most distinctive features of the Duskywing is its graduated textured purl stripe pattern. Rather than evenly spaced stripes, the contrast-color stripes are placed at increasing intervals, giving the fabric a dynamic, visually interesting rhythm. All hems — including the bottom hem, cuffs, and neckband — are worked in K1/P1 ribbing using the contrast color, which creates a clean, cohesive finish that ties the two colors together beautifully.

The pullover is constructed bottom-up and seamlessly in the round, a method beloved by knitters who prefer to minimize finishing work. The body and sleeves are each worked separately as tubes, then joined at the yoke. The sleeves feature increase shaping as they are worked upward. Once the sleeves and body are joined, the yoke is worked in one piece to the neckline. The only seaming required involves grafting the sleeves to the base of the yoke at the underarms — a small but important step that ensures a smooth, professional join.

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction — the garment begins at the hem and works upward toward the neckline
  • Seamless knitting worked in the round — both the body and sleeves are knitted as tubes using circular needles or double-pointed needles
  • Stripes in a contrast color — narrow textured stripes are introduced at graduated intervals throughout the body and sleeves
  • Graduated stripe spacing — the intervals between stripes increase progressively, adding visual texture and design interest
  • Yoke construction — sleeves are joined to the body and the yoke is worked in one seamless piece to the neck
  • Underarm grafting — a small number of stitches are grafted at the underarms to close the join between sleeves and body
  • Long-Tail Cast On — specified for casting on the body stitches, producing a neat and slightly elastic edge

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch — the primary fabric of the body, sleeves, and yoke; worked in the round as all knit stitches
  • Purl stitches — used within the contrast-color stripe sections to create the textured stripe effect against the stockinette background
  • K1/P1 Rib — used for the bottom hem, sleeve cuffs, and neckband, all worked in the contrast color
  • Increase stitches — used along the sleeves to shape them from cuff to underarm

Materials Required

The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Montague, a 100% cotton worsted weight yarn sold in 50g/110-yard hanks. Two colors are used:

  • Main Color (MC): Plum — 9 to 19 hanks depending on size
