What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a pair of fitted socks worked from the cuff down to the toe. Three finished sizes are offered, measuring 7, 8, or 9 inches in circumference, making them adaptable for a wide range of foot sizes. The sample shown is knitted in the medium (8-inch) size. The Cobblestone Stitch Pattern

The defining feature of these socks is the Cobblestone stitch pattern, which is achieved by alternating two distinct six-round sequences of two-by-two ribbing. In Rounds 1–6, the ribbing is worked as knit 2, purl 2. In Rounds 7–12, the sequence shifts to purl 2, knit 2. This simple alternation offsets the columns of knits and purls, creating a richly patterned, almost woven-looking fabric on the leg. The 12-round repeat is worked a total of seven times, or to the knitter's desired leg length before the heel flap begins. This makes the pattern highly customizable for different leg lengths.

Techniques Used

• Top-down (cuff-down) construction: The sock begins at the cuff with a cast-on of 56, 64, or 72 stitches distributed evenly across four double-pointed needles, then progresses down through the leg, heel, gusset, foot, and toe.
• Seamless knitting in the round: The leg and foot are worked entirely in the round, eliminating any seams for a smooth, comfortable fit.
• Heel flap construction: The heel flap is worked back and forth in rows across half the total stitch count (28, 32, or 36 stitches). A textured stitch pattern — combining knit stitches, slipped stitches with yarn in back, and garter selvedge edges — reinforces the heel for durability. The flap is worked until 14, 16, or 18 garter ridges appear on each side.
• Short-row heel turning: After the heel flap, the heel is turned using a traditional short-row method. Stitches are decreased on each row using ssk on right-side rows and p2tog on wrong-side rows, working progressively closer to the gap created by each turn until all heel flap stitches have been consumed.
