The range, and how to navigate it

King Cole is one of the broadest yarn ranges in British craft, which is a blessing once you know your way around it and bewildering when you do not. Broadly, it splits into everyday washable blends built for family knitting, baby-specific soft yarns, novelty and effect yarns such as glitter and self-striping, and a smaller group of natural-fibre yarns including merino and cotton blends. The weights run from 4 ply through DK and aran to chunky and super chunky, so most patterns you own can be matched from within the range.

Choosing by project

• Children's and family knits: a washable DK or aran blend. Hard-wearing, colourfast, and machine washable, which is the deciding factor for school jumpers.
• Baby garments and blankets: a dedicated baby yarn in DK or 4 ply, chosen for softness against new skin.
• Blankets and throws: chunky or super chunky, where speed matters and the yardage adds up quickly.
• Socks: a self-patterning 4 ply with nylon content for heel and toe durability.
• Special occasion knits: glitter and effect yarns, best used in plain stitches so the yarn is the feature.

Substituting King Cole into a pattern

Match the tension first and the yardage second. Two aran yarns at the same stated tension can differ by a hundred metres per 100g, and that difference decides whether four balls finish your jumper or five. Check the ball band for both figures, buy a single dye lot for the whole garment, and keep one ball band with the leftovers so you can repeat the purchase later. If a pattern names a yarn you cannot find, look for the same fibre content and metres per 100g rather than trusting the weight name alone.

Working with effect and novelty yarns

Glitter, boucle and self-striping yarns need a light touch in design terms. Keep the stitch pattern simple – stocking stitch, garter or a basic rib – because cables and lace disappear entirely in a textured yarn and you will have done the work for nothing. Metallic strands can catch on needle joins, so a smooth metal or well-finished wooden needle helps. With self-striping yarns worked on two matching pieces, start both from the same point in the colour repeat if you want the stripes to line up.

Tension, and the thing most people skip

Even with a familiar yarn, swatch. Work at least 15cm square in the pattern stitch, wash and dry it as you will treat the garment, then measure across the centre. Acrylic-rich blends can relax noticeably after washing and a jumper that fitted off the needles may sit differently after its first wash. Adjust needle size, not your own knitting tension, until the numbers match.

Care

Most washable King Cole blends take a cool machine wash on a wool or delicates cycle. Dry flat rather than hanging, and never tumble dry acrylic-rich yarn at heat, which flattens the fibre permanently. Wool-rich and merino yarns are happier hand washed in lukewarm water, rolled in a towel and dried flat.
