A practical guide to knitting socks from these free patterns
Socks are the project that turns a knitter into a sock knitter. They are portable, endlessly repeatable and use small amounts of yarn, and once the construction clicks you can make a pair without looking at the instructions again. The patterns gathered here cover the whole range: plain 4 ply everyday socks, ribbed and cabled pairs, lace ankle socks, bed socks in chunky yarn, house slippers and children's sizes. They are broadly split by construction, so decide first whether you want to work from the cuff down or from the toe up.
Top-down or toe-up
Cuff-down socks begin with ribbing, run down the leg, work a heel flap and turn, pick up gusset stitches, decrease back to the original count and then finish with a toe grafted using Kitchener stitch. Most sock knitters learn this way because the written instructions read logically and the heel flap is hard-wearing. Toe-up socks start with a Judy's magic cast-on, increase to full width, use a short-row or afterthought heel and finish with a stretchy bind-off at the cuff. The advantage is that you can try the sock on as you go and simply keep knitting until the yarn is nearly gone, which is ideal when you have a single 100g skein and no idea how far it will stretch.
Yarn, needles and quantities
- 4 ply sock yarn with 20-25% nylon on 2.25mm to 2.5mm needles is the standard, and the nylon is what keeps heels from wearing through.
- A pair of adult socks takes roughly 100g, about 400m. Larger feet or long legs may need a second mini skein for heels and toes.
- DK on 3mm needles makes a quicker boot sock; chunky on 4.5mm needles gives bed socks in an evening or two.
- Double-pointed needles, one long circular for magic loop, or two short circulars all give the same result. Use whichever your hands prefer.
Knit socks at a firmer tension than the ball band suggests, usually around 30 stitches to 10cm in 4 ply. A dense fabric wears far longer and stops the foot bagging inside a shoe. Self-striping and speckled yarns look best in plain stocking stitch, where the colour is the pattern; save cables and lace for solid or gently tonal shades.
Getting the fit right
Measure the foot circumference at the widest part of the ball, then aim for a sock about 10% smaller so it grips. Length is measured from the back of the heel to the tip of the toe; stop the foot section about 4-5cm short of that measurement before starting toe decreases. Leg length is entirely your choice, though a longer leg eats yarn faster than most people expect. Ribbing over the whole leg, rather than just the cuff, is the simplest way to keep a sock up all day.
Techniques you will pick up
Sock knitting is a compact course in useful skills: working in the round, a heel flap with slipped stitches, short-row shaping, picking up stitches along an edge, gusset decreases and grafting. Kitchener stitch is the one people dread, though it is only four movements repeated; it helps to say them aloud the first few times. If you would rather avoid it entirely, choose a pattern with a rounded toe closed by drawing yarn through the remaining stitches.
Care and repairs
Most superwash sock yarn washes at 30 degrees in a mesh bag, though hand washing extends the life of a handknit pair considerably. Dry flat rather than on a hot radiator. When a heel eventually thins, darn it early over a darning mushroom while there is still fabric to anchor to, or reinforce heels and toes from the start by holding a fine reinforcing thread alongside the main yarn.
Common questions
What is the simplest sock knitting pattern to start with? A plain stocking stitch sock in 4 ply with a slipped-stitch heel flap. It teaches every skill the fancier pairs rely on.
Can I download the PDF? Yes, every pattern in this collection is a free download you can print or read on screen.
How long does a pair of socks take? A first pair often takes a couple of weeks of evenings; an experienced knitter with plain 4 ply socks might manage a pair in a week.
Do I have to use double-pointed needles? No. Magic loop on a 80cm circular needle gives identical results and is easier to carry about.
