Knitting for yourself, for once

Most knitters spend years making things for other people before they knit a garment that actually fits them. This collection is where to start: free knitting patterns for women covering jumpers, cardigans, waistcoats, summer tops, shawls, wraps, hats, mittens and socks, all available as free PDF downloads. The range spans weights from 4 ply through DK to super chunky, and construction from traditional flat-knitted pieces on straight needles to seamless top-down yokes.

Yarn weights, and what 8 ply means

  • 4 ply (fingering) on 3-3.25mm needles. Fine-gauge tops, shawls, indoor cardigans. Slow but beautiful.
  • DK, also sold as 8 ply, on 4mm needles. The most versatile weight in British patterns and the one most cardigans use.
  • Aran on 5mm needles. Warm, cabled and finished in a season.
  • Chunky and super chunky on 6-10mm needles. The fastest route to a finished jumper.

Australian and New Zealand patterns use the ply system throughout, which is why 8 ply and DK are interchangeable terms. If a pattern comes from a different tradition, ignore the name and match the tension figure instead: that is the only thing that determines whether the garment will fit.

Getting the fit right

Womenswear patterns are graded by bust measurement, and the ease designed into the garment decides whether it sits close to the body or oversized. Take your actual high bust and full bust measurements, then look at the finished measurements table rather than the size label. As a general rule, 0-5cm of positive ease gives a fitted jumper, 5-12cm a comfortable everyday fit, and 15cm or more the relaxed modern silhouette. Check the schematic for body length, sleeve length and armhole depth as well; adjusting length is easy, and the place to do it is before the armhole shaping begins, or between the underarm and the cuff on a sleeve.

Choosing by construction

Set-in sleeve garments knitted flat in four pieces give the most tailored shoulder and hold their shape best over years, at the cost of seaming. Raglans are simpler and comfortable for most figures. Circular yokes suit stranded colourwork and drop shoulders suit oversized shapes. Many makers specifically want patterns worked on straight needles, and there are plenty here: back, front, two sleeves, mattress stitch seams and a picked-up neckband, with no circular needle required at any point.

Skills you will use

Beyond knit and purl, expect increases and decreases shaped at the edges, short rows for a raised back neck, picking up stitches for bands and collars, buttonholes, three-needle cast-off at the shoulders and grafting. Cables, lace charts and stranded colourwork appear across the collection, and each one is easier to learn on a swatch than on a sleeve. Lifelines threaded through a lace row every ten rows will save you at least one evening of misery.

Tools and notions

An interchangeable circular needle set covers most eventualities and saves buying pairs one at a time. Add stitch markers, a row counter, a locking marker to mark the right side, a tape measure, spare circular needles or waste yarn as stitch holders, blocking pins and a mat, and a blunt tapestry needle. Buttons should be chosen after the bands are knitted, not before, so you can match the buttonhole size.

Blocking and care

Blocking is not optional on a garment. Soak the pieces, press out the water in a towel, pin to the schematic measurements and let them dry fully before seaming; stitches even out, lace opens and edges stop curling. Wash finished knitwear by hand in cool water or on a wool cycle, dry flat, and store folded rather than hung. Using a fabric comb regularly keeps merino from looking tired.

Common questions

Can I download the patterns as PDFs? Every pattern in this collection is a free PDF download you can print or read on screen.

How much yarn does a woman's jumper take? Roughly 800g-1kg in DK for an average adult size, and more for aran or a longer body.
