Aran and worsted weight: substantial yarn, satisfying progress

This is the weight most knitters reach for when they want something finished without giving up detail. Worsted knits at around 20 stitches to 10cm on 4.5mm needles; Aran, sometimes labelled heavy worsted or 10-ply, is slightly heavier again at around 18 stitches on 5mm. Both are thick enough to grow visibly every evening and firm enough to sculpt a cable, a bobble or a moss stitch panel into proper relief. You will find wool, superwash merino, British breed wools, cotton, alpaca blends, tweeds and easy-care acrylic mixes here, in solids, heathers and hand-dyed colourways.

Aran or worsted: is the difference real?

It is real but narrow. Worsted is a North American category, Aran a British and Irish one, and the two overlap heavily. In practice, most patterns written for one will work with the other provided you swatch and are prepared to change needle size. If your worsted swatch comes out too small against an Aran pattern, go up half a needle size; if an Aran yarn comes out too large against a worsted pattern, go down. What matters far more than the label on the band is the stated tension, so compare that figure between your substitute and the pattern's original yarn before you commit.

What to make with it

• Cabled jumpers and cardigans. This is Aran's home ground; the classic fisherman's sweater exists in this weight for a reason.
• Hats, mittens, cowls and scarves that finish in an evening or two and make excellent presents.
• Blankets and afghans, where the extra weight gives a substantial, comforting fabric without taking a year.
• Baby cardigans, jackets and pram blankets in a soft, machine-washable version.
• Crochet homeware: baskets, rugs and cushion covers, worked on a 5-6mm hook for a firm fabric.

Fibres and how they wear

Pure wool and British breed wools are hardwearing, warm and block into shape magnificently, which is exactly what a heavily cabled garment needs; they can be a little rustic next to the skin. Superwash merino is soft and washable but has less memory, so it can grow lengthways in a heavy garment. Alpaca and alpaca blends are wonderfully warm and drapey, though heavy, so choose a shorter body length. Tweeds hide small irregularities and give a lovely speckled surface. Cotton Aran is heavy and inelastic, better for homeware and summer accessories than for jumpers. Acrylic and wool-acrylic blends are practical for blankets and children's clothes and take machine washing well.

Needles, hooks and quantities

Around 5mm needles for Aran, 4.5mm for worsted, with 4mm for ribbing and edgings. For crochet, 5mm or 5.5mm hooks are the usual starting point. As planning figures, an adult cabled jumper generally needs around 1,100-1,600m, which is more than a plain one of the same size because cables consume yarn; a child's jumper 500-800m; a hat 100-150m; a large throw 1,500-2,500m. Buy the full quantity in a single dye lot and add a ball for safety, especially for a cabled design where the yardage note may assume a lighter hand than yours. Always swatch in the actual pattern stitch.

Care and finishing

Block finished pieces by soaking, blotting in a towel and patting out to the schematic measurements; with cables, pat them plump rather than flattening them. Non-superwash wool wants hand washing in cool water with no agitation, since agitation plus heat is exactly how you felt a garment by accident. Superwash and acrylic will take a 30 degree wool cycle. Dry flat and store folded, never on a hanger, because a heavy Aran jumper will stretch its own shoulders out within a season. Common questions

Can I use worsted weight yarn for a UK Aran pattern? Usually yes. Knit a tension square first and go up a needle size if your swatch comes out small.

Which needle size suits Aran yarn? 5mm is the common starting point, but the ball band and your own swatch are the final word.

Is Aran the same as chunky? No. Chunky is a step heavier again, knitting at around 14 stitches to 10cm on 6mm needles, and the two are not interchangeable.

How many balls do I need for a cabled Aran jumper? Typically 10-16 balls of 50g, depending on size, length and how much cabling the design carries.
