4 ply, known as fingering weight or sock weight in North America, knits at roughly 28 stitches to 10cm on 3.25mm needles. Those small stitches are what give a 4 ply garment its particular quality: a smooth, even fabric with real drape, light enough to layer under a coat or a blazer and fine enough to show lace, stranded colourwork and delicate texture at their best. Choosing a 4 ply project honestly

There is no getting away from it: a 4 ply adult cardigan has roughly twice the stitches of the same garment in DK. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to choose carefully. Pick a design whose knitting you will enjoy row by row, because you will be doing a lot of it. Lace and colourwork keep the interest up; plain stocking stitch in 4 ply is wonderful television knitting but can feel endless. If you are new to fine yarn, start with a shawl, a pair of socks or a baby cardigan before committing to a full-length adult jumper.

Yarn, needles and quantities

• Merino and merino blends are soft and warm and take blocking well; a little nylon adds strength and is essential in socks.

• Hand-dyed and gradient skeins come into their own here, since the small stitches blend the colours rather than pooling awkwardly.

Working flat, on straights, and in pieces

A great many patterns here are written the traditional British way: knitted flat in separate pieces on straight needles, then seamed. If you dislike circular needles or find long rounds tiring, that is a real advantage, and it also gives a seam that supports the weight of a fine fabric across the shoulders. Others are worked in the round or top-down. Neither is better, but do read the construction note before buying so the pattern matches how you like to knit. Flat pieces are easier to block accurately and easier to adjust for length.

Blocking, which matters more here than anywhere

Nothing transforms 4 ply like a proper wet block. Lace that looks like a crumpled dishcloth on the needles opens into something entirely different once soaked and pinned out. Fill a basin with cool water and a little wool wash, submerge the piece and leave it twenty minutes, squeeze gently without wringing, roll in a towel, then pin it out to the schematic measurements on blocking mats. Blocking wires give lovely straight edges on shawls. Let it dry completely before unpinning. Colourwork evens out the same way; the little irregularities in your stranding largely disappear once the fabric relaxes.

Care and longevity

Fine knits deserve a little more care and reward it with years of wear. Hand wash in cool water, or use a wool cycle for superwash yarns, and dry flat. Store folded with cedar or lavender rather than mothballs, and give woollens an airing before putting them away for summer.
