These socks where designed for just that case – a lovely sock yarn that you do not know the exact gauge. So you start making a stockinette toe and foot, take your gauge (and calculate some adjustments for the rest of the sock if necessary) and now you can start a pattern! In this case, the gusset increases are made purlwise on the instep and a cabled pattern, resembling shoe lacing, breaks the sometimes boring stockinette.
