Made with Love – Pink Baby Sponge Bag and Hooded Bath Towel Embroidery Pattern by Anchor
This free downloadable PDF pattern from Anchor Studio (Design No. 00600003-00708-10) guides crafters through embroidering two coordinating baby accessories: a pink baby sponge bag and a pink hooded baby bath towel. Both items are decorated with a sweet, matching embroidered border worked in Anchor Stranded Cotton, making them a charming handmade gift set for a new arrival. The pattern is rated Easy to Intermediate and is ideal for embroiderers who are comfortable working from a charted design on Aida fabric.
What Is Being Made
Baby Sponge Bag
The first project is a pink baby sponge bag measuring 25 x 19 cm, featuring an embroidered panel of approximately 19 x 2.5 cm positioned centrally on a built-in Aida strip. The sponge bag provides a practical and pretty storage solution for bath-time essentials, elevated by a delicate hand-embroidered decorative border.
Baby Bath Towel with Hood
The second project is a pink hooded baby bath towel measuring 73 x 73 cm, again featuring a pre-woven Aida panel that receives an embroidered border of approximately 18 x 2.5 cm. The hooded design is a classic baby bath staple, and the embroidery transforms it into a truly special, personalised keepsake.
Techniques Used
Cross Stitch
Cross stitch forms the foundation of both embroidered designs. Each square on the printed chart represents one complete cross stitch worked over a single Aida square. The embroiderer is instructed to work the cross stitch first before adding any backstitch detail. Cross stitch on Aida fabric is a beginner-friendly counted embroidery technique where the even weave of the fabric acts as a natural grid, making it straightforward to follow a charted pattern accurately.
Backstitch
Backstitch is used as a finishing and outlining stitch to add definition and fine detail to the design. The pattern notes that backstitch is worked from right to left, with each stitch sharing a hole with the previous one to create a continuous, solid line. This technique is commonly used in conjunction with cross stitch to sharpen outlines, add lettering, or create delicate linear elements that cross stitch alone cannot achieve.
Stitches Used
- Cross Stitch – the primary filling stitch, worked over one Aida square per chart square
- Backstitch – worked from right to left for outlines and fine detail
Materials and Threads
Embroidery Thread
Both projects use Anchor Stranded Cotton in 8-metre skeins, worked with 2 strands throughout. The following six Anchor thread colours are required for each project:
- Anchor #25
- Anchor #38
- Anchor #73
- Anchor #253
- Anchor #292
- Anchor #311
One skein of each colour is sufficient for both the sponge bag and the hooded towel. Anchor Stranded Cotton is a six-strand divisible thread produced in accordance with Oeko-Tex standards, with pH-tested dye lots that adhere to global colour fastness standards.
Needle
A tapestry needle No. 24 is specified for both projects. A tapestry needle has a blunt tip and a large eye, making it well suited to counted embroidery on Aida fabric as it passes cleanly between the fabric threads without splitting them.
