It is a delicate garment with an all-over colour-work pattern originally created by Jeannie Jarmson of Shetland in the 1930s. The slightly loose fitting blouson style of the top is typical of this period. It is worked in the round from the bottom up with steeks added at the armholes and front neck to enable a seamless construction. The shoulders are then joined together using three-needle bind-off.
