What is Being Made

The Zaunkönig is a two-colour brioche knit cowl and shoulder warmer designed by independent designer Sybil Ra. The name Zaunkönig references the German word for the Eurasian wren, which translates literally to "king of the fence" – a poetic nod to the fence-like pattern created by the brioche technique used throughout the design.

Techniques and Stitches

This pattern showcases the two-colour brioche knitting technique, a marvellous method for creating gorgeous visual effects with contrasting yarns. The brioche stitch family is central to this design, with specific increases and decreases that build the signature lattice pattern:

• brk2inc – a brioche knit increase worked as knit, yarn over, knit into one stitch
• brp2inc – a brioche purl increase worked as purl, yarn over, purl into one stitch
• brkX – the primary brioche stitch that creates the distinctive lattice effect throughout the cowl

The pattern is structured with row-by-row instructions and includes charts of the pattern repeat to guide knitters through the design.
