The Wayfarer Hat by Carol Herman

What is Being Made

The Wayfarer Hat is an asymmetrical knitted hat designed as a companion piece to the Passport Mitts. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a stylish addition to fall and winter wardrobes, available in four sizes ranging from Child/Teen through Adult X-Large. The hat features an asymmetrical construction that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to beginner knitters. Two fit options are provided: an original fit and a relaxed fit achieved by adjusting needle size and adding extra pattern repeats.

Techniques Used

This knitting project incorporates several fundamental and intermediate techniques suitable for crafters developing their skills. The pattern requires working in the round, a core technique for hat construction that creates seamless cylindrical fabric. Cable knitting is featured prominently, adding textural depth and visual complexity to the design. Additional techniques include the Cable Cast-On for a secure foundation, knitting through the back loop for twisted stitches, and decreasing methods using k2tog (knit two together) and p2tog (purl two together) to shape the crown.

Stitches Used

  • Cable Cast-On: Creates a sturdy, elastic edge suitable for hat openings
  • Cables: Form the primary textural and design element throughout the hat body
  • Knit and purl stitches: Build the base fabric and ribbing
  • Knit through the back loop: Produces twisted stitches for decorative or structural purposes
  • K2tog and p2tog: Decrease stitches for crown shaping and finishing

Materials

This pattern is designed for DK and Sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in fiber selection. The sample shown uses Malabrigo Arroyo, a Sport weight yarn (5 ply) composed of 100% Merino wool with 335 yards per 100 grams, shown in the colorway Lavanda. Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 200 yards for Child/Teen and Adult Small, 250 yards for Adult Large, and 300 yards for Adult X-Large. Circular needles are required for working in the round, with specific needle sizes adjustable based on desired fit and gauge.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, The Wayfarer Hat is accessible to knitters new to hat construction while introducing cable techniques and in-the-round knitting. The pattern notes provide clear guidance for customizing fit, making it an excellent learning project for developing fundamental skills in shaping and stitch manipulation.
