Product Description

Available as part of the How Does Your Garden Grow e-book set and made to go with the Mary Mary Mitts, this is a pretty and delicate patterned wide wrap that can be worn loosely to keep the chill off your shoulders or to wrap you up cozy like a scarf.

Yarn: 7 balls of Rowan Cashsoft Baby DK or at least 950 yards of DK yarn. I would recommend a wool or merino based yarn that can be blocked gently.

Size: 47 x 153cm (18.5 x 60") Blocked size, not including the edging

Written in UK terms with American translations included.

The body of the wrap is worked back and forth in rows and the border is added by working continuously around the wrap.

Quite Contrary Wrap by Sandra Paul

What is Being Made

The Quite Contrary Wrap is a delicate, patterned crochet shawl designed as a versatile one-piece wide rectangle. This wrap can be worn loosely draped over the shoulders to provide warmth and elegance, or wrapped snugly like a scarf for added coziness. The design draws inspiration from the classic nursery rhyme "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary," featuring a pretty and intricate stitch pattern throughout.

Crochet Techniques Used

The wrap is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The main body is worked back and forth in rows, establishing the rectangular shape and patterned fabric. Once the central piece is complete, a border edging is added and worked in the round, creating a finished frame around the entire wrap. This combination of flat rows and circular edging is a classic approach for shawl construction that adds visual interest and definition to the edges.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern incorporates a selection of intermediate-level crochet stitches that work together to create the wrap's distinctive appearance. While the pattern does include special stitches, they are limited in number, making this an excellent project for crocheters looking to expand their skills without overwhelming complexity. The pattern provides clear abbreviations for all stitches used, and a crochet chart is included to assist with stitch placement and pattern repeats.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Quite Contrary Wrap is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates a delicate, drape-friendly fabric ideal for wrap construction. The original yarn featured in the pattern photographs was Rowan Cashsoft Baby DK, which is now discontinued. However, the pattern provides alternative yarn suggestions, including options from Sirdar, allowing crafters to select suitable substitutes that match the DK weight specification and desired fiber content.
