Product Description
Do you love, just like me, to crochet a striped blanket? But do you hate the amount of loose ends. The advantage of this pattern is that you don't have to hide an enormous amount of loose ends. By using 3 colors you can just leave the color that you are not using. Later on you take the thread up along the side of the crochet work. To ensure the side remains straight and the blanket doesn’t bulge, do not pull these threads too tight.
The blanket I crocheted is approximately 80 X 80 cm. By setting up a different number of chain stitches you can easily crochet your blanket into a different size.
Puff Stripes Blanket Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The Puff Stripes Blanket, created by Carolien, is a crochet blanket designed with a practical approach to managing color changes. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crafters seeking to create a striped throw blanket while minimizing the tedious finishing work of weaving in loose ends. The innovative design allows you to carry unused yarn colors up the side of your work rather than cutting and rejoining yarn with each color change, resulting in a more efficient and enjoyable crochet experience.
Finished Dimensions
The blanket featured in the pattern measures approximately 80 x 80 cm (approximately 31.5 x 31.5 inches). The pattern is easily customizable—by adjusting the number of chain stitches in your foundation, you can crochet the blanket to your desired finished size without altering the overall construction method or stitch pattern.
Crochet Techniques
This pattern employs a straightforward approach suitable for beginner-level crocheters. The primary technique involves working with three colors in a striped pattern, carrying the unused yarn colors up the side edges of the blanket rather than fastening off between color changes. This method significantly reduces the number of yarn ends that need to be hidden during finishing. To maintain a straight, even edge and prevent the blanket from bulging or warping, care should be taken not to pull the carried yarn too tightly as you work.
Stitches Used
The Puff Stripes Blanket utilizes the following crochet stitches (in US terminology):
- CH (Chain) – Used for the foundation and throughout the pattern
- SL.ST. (Slip Stitch) – Used for joining and transitions
- SC (Single Crochet) – A fundamental stitch used in the blanket construction
- DC (Double Crochet) – Provides height and drape to the fabric
- PST (Puff Stitch) – The signature stitch that creates the textured, dimensional stripe effect throughout the blanket
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for Scheepjes Merino Soft yarn, a blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Microfibre, and 25% Acrylic. This fiber composition provides durability, softness, and easy care. The yarn is worked at a worsted weight, making it suitable for quick project completion and beginner-friendly handling.
For the approximately 80 x 80 cm blanket, the yardage requirements are:
- Color A: Lautrec (630) – 5 balls (475 meters)
- Color B: Pissarro (651) – 5 balls (450 meters)
- Color C – Yardage specified in complete pattern
Pattern Advantages
The Puff Stripes Blanket pattern is designed with practical finishing in mind. By carrying yarn colors up the side rather than cutting them between color changes, you eliminate the need to weave in a large quantity of loose ends—a common frustration in striped crochet projects. This technique streamlines the finishing process while maintaining a professional appearance, provided the carried yarns are managed with appropriate tension.
