Noemi Jumper Knitting Pattern – Women's Cable Jumper in Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK

The Noemi Jumper is a women's knitted jumper pattern designed by Debbie Bliss, worked in Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK yarn. Rated as an advanced knitting project, this pattern offers a beautifully textured, structured garment that showcases classic cable techniques combined with the relaxed, lived-in appeal of a denim-effect cotton yarn. The result is a timeless, wearable piece suited to knitters who are confident with more complex stitch patterns and construction methods.

What Is Being Made

The Noemi Jumper is a women's pullover-style jumper, constructed as a fully seamed garment. It is worked in separate flat pieces — typically front, back, and sleeves — which are then joined together using traditional seaming methods. This construction approach gives the finished jumper excellent structure and shape retention, making it ideal for a garment featuring prominent cable detailing. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and includes instructions for multiple sizes, with the first size given first and larger sizes following in round brackets.

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction: The jumper is worked from the lower hem upward toward the shoulders, a traditional approach that allows for straightforward length adjustments before the armhole shaping begins.
  • Worked flat: Each piece of the garment is knitted back and forth in rows on straight or circular needles, rather than in the round. This is the classic method for seamed knitwear and produces neat, stable edges that are easy to seam.
  • Seamed finishing: Once all pieces are complete, they are joined using seaming techniques such as mattress stitch or backstitch, creating defined seams that add structure and durability to the finished jumper.
  • Cable knitting: The standout technique in the Noemi Jumper is the use of cables, which are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle. Cables produce raised, rope-like or twisted column effects on the fabric surface and are a hallmark of traditional and contemporary knitwear design alike.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

As an advanced-level pattern, the Noemi Jumper draws on a range of knitting stitches and techniques. The PDF references standard knitting abbreviations and stitch constructions including:

  • Cable stitches: The primary decorative element, requiring a cable needle to hold stitches to the front or back of work while others are knitted, creating the signature twisted or plaited cable columns.
  • Pattern repeats (patt): Sections of the design are worked in established pattern repeats, requiring the knitter to follow and maintain the cable or textural sequence across rows.
  • Yarn over needle (yon) and yarn round needle (yrn / y2rn): These techniques are used to create deliberate increases or decorative eyelets within the fabric, adding detail and shaping where required.
  • Pass slipped stitch over (psso): Used in combination with other stitches to create neat decreases, often paired with yarn-over movements for lace-adjacent detailing or clean shaping.
  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundation of all the textural work, with purl stitches typically forming the background panels that allow cable columns to stand out in sharp relief.
  • Alternate row working (alt): Many of the cable and shaping instructions are worked on alternate rows, a standard approach in flat knitting that keeps the reverse side of the fabric neat.

Materials – Yarn and Needles

The Noemi Jumper is specifically designed for use with Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK yarn. This is a DK weight (double knitting) yarn, and the pattern quantities and tension have been calculated based on this specific yarn. Debbie Bliss advises that the finished result cannot be guaranteed if any yarn other than the specified Cotton Denim DK is substituted, as fibre content, weight, and tension behaviour will vary between yarns.

  • Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK — a cotton-based yarn

Great service

The actual pattern knits up well and is easy to follow. The modelled photograph of the jumper is inaccurate to the written pattern. The rib front and back looks on the photo to be a few rows but the written pattern require 24 rows, more like the rib length on the sleeve. I usually knit to the ball required amounts but I’m thinking I may need another 1 ball, with posting and packing I think will end up costly. So it’s knitting up lovely, but may require an extra ball of wool and note the rib...
