Moda Fabrics Indigo Quilt Pattern Summary

The Moda Fabrics Indigo Quilt is a downloadable PDF quilting pattern designed by Moda Fabrics, suitable for intermediate quilters. The finished quilt measures an impressive 79¼" x 89¼", making it a generous bed or lap quilt. The design draws on a classic indigo-inspired palette of indigos, blues, browns, and tans, creating a timeless, heritage-style aesthetic that works beautifully with a wide range of cotton fabric collections.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a large pieced quilt featuring two distinct block types set on point with setting triangles and corner triangles, finished with a pieced outer border and pieced corner blocks. The combination of strip-pieced blocks, diagonal setting, and a structured border gives the quilt visual complexity while keeping the construction manageable for an intermediate quilter.

  • Finished Quilt Size: 79¼" x 89¼"
  • Finished Block Size: 7" x 7"
  • Total Block 1 count: 54 blocks
  • Total Block 2 count: 48 segments used across 4 strip sets

Block Designs

Block 1

Block 1 is a strip-pieced block constructed from Fabrics 1 through 9 (fat quarters in the indigo, blue, brown, and tan colorway) combined with a neutral background fabric (Fabric 10). Each of the nine colored fabrics contributes two matching strip sets, producing 18 strip sets in total. Each strip set is cut into six 3½" segments, yielding 108 segments overall. To assemble each block, two matching segments are stitched to opposite sides of a 7½" x 1½" Fabric 10 background strip, creating a clean, structured horizontal striped block. A total of 54 Block 1 units are made.

Block 2

Block 2 uses Fabrics 11 and 12, each contributing two strip sets for a total of 4 strip sets. These are cut into 12 segments of 3½" each per strip set, producing 48 segments in total. Block 2 provides contrast and variety within the quilt layout, likely alternating with or framing Block 1 units in the on-point setting.

Quilt Construction and Setting

The blocks are set on point (diagonally), which is a hallmark of traditional quilt design and adds dynamic movement to the finished piece. This diagonal setting requires:

  • Setting triangles cut from 11¼" x 11¼" squares cut twice diagonally (quarter-square triangles) — 6 squares yielding 24 setting triangles
  • Corner triangles cut from 5⅞" x 5⅞" squares cut once diagonally (half-square triangles) — 2 squares yielding 4 corner triangles

Setting triangles fill the jagged edges of a diagonal layout, while corner triangles square up the four corners of the quilt top. Both are cut from Fabric 12, ensuring a cohesive visual frame around the central design.

Pieced Border and Corner Blocks

The outer border is a distinctive feature of this pattern. Rather than a simple strip border, Moda Fabrics incorporates a pieced border constructed from 5"-wide strips cut along the length of fabric (LENGTH of fabric, not width), which minimizes seaming and preserves the integrity of the border design. The instructions specify pressing and lightly starching these border strips for ease of handling.

The pieced border corner blocks add an extra layer of craftsmanship:

  • From four of the border strips, a 5" x 10½" rectangle is cut for each corner block
  • From the remaining four strips, a
